Chapter 10: The Signature That Destroyed Everything

The document shook in the stranger’s hand.

I stared at the signature at the bottom.

Vanessa Reed.

My wife’s name.

My entire body went numb.

“No.””

The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.

The stranger smiled.

“I thought you’d say that.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like someone had just ripped open an old wound.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than the document.

Because if it was fake, she would have laughed.

She would have denied it.

She would have fought.

Instead, she looked away.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“Don’t say my name like you’re the victim.””

The rain outside became louder.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel, you need to understand the situation.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew too.””

His silence confirmed it.

I laughed.

A broken, empty sound.

“My whole life.””

I looked around the room.

“My whole life has been surrounded by people who knew the truth.””

No one answered.

The stranger folded the paper.

“My name is Victor Hale.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Hale.””

Victor smiled.

“Yes.””

Richard’s face darkened.

“You’re his son.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Richard clenched his jaw.

“Victor’s father was one of the men Elena discovered.””

Victor shrugged.

“And your mother made the mistake of thinking exposing him would be enough.””

He looked at me.

“She didn’t understand how powerful we were.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You’re admitting this?””

Victor smiled.

“Why wouldn’t I?””

He stepped closer.

“Everyone thinks secrets are protected by silence.””

He tapped the document.

“They’re protected by paperwork.””

I looked at Vanessa again.

“What did you sign?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“What did you sign?””

Her voice barely came out.

“A statement.””

My stomach tightened.

“About what?””

“That Elena left willingly.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“You lied.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt worse than the betrayal.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Victor.

Then at Marcus.

“Because they threatened you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“They showed me photographs.””

“What photographs?””

Her voice broke.

“Of you.””

I froze.

“They knew your school. Your home. Your schedule.””

She stepped closer.

“I was twenty-nine. I didn’t know what to do.””

“So you destroyed my mother.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I tried to save both of you.””

I looked at the document.

“You signed away her chance to come home.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I thought if I gave them what they wanted, they would stop.””

Victor laughed.

“They always think that.””

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

“You promised.””

“And you believed me.””

The way he said it made my blood run cold.

I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t working with him.

She was trapped by him.

But that didn’t erase what she had done.

“What happened after you signed?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Your mother found out.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“Because I told her.””

Richard looked shocked.

“You confessed?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I couldn’t live with it.””

I looked at her.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“She wasn’t angry.””

That surprised me.

“She just cried.””

A painful silence.

“She said, ‘You were trying to protect my son. I can’t hate you for that.’”

I looked away.

My mother.

Even betrayed, she still understood.

Victor stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Richard moved between us.

“You’re not taking him.””

Victor smiled.

“You think you can stop me?””

Then Marcus spoke.

A sentence I never expected.

“You’ll have to go through me.””

Everyone froze.

Victor looked amused.

“After everything you’ve done, you still pretend to be his father?””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“I made mistakes.””

Victor laughed.

“You ruined your family to save yourself.””

Marcus looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something real.

Regret.

“I should have protected her.””

The front door suddenly slammed open.

A voice echoed through the house.

“Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

My heart stopped.

Because after eleven years of searching…

May you like

I finally saw her.

My mother.
