Chapter 4: The Photograph Behind the Lie

The woman standing at my front door looked like a stranger.

But the second she said my mother’s name, something inside me shifted.

“Your father never told you…” she whispered.

Her fingers trembled as she held the photograph toward me.

I didn’t take it immediately.

I couldn’t.

Because for eleven years, I had searched for answers.

And now, suddenly, everyone seemed to have them except me.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The woman swallowed.

“My name is Sofia.””

She looked past me into the house.

“I’m Elena’s sister.””

My heart stopped.

My mother had a sister?

How could I not know that?

I turned toward Marcus.

My father’s face was unreadable.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

He looked defeated.

“You knew,” I said.

Marcus looked down.

“Daniel…”

“You knew she had family?””

Sofia stepped forward.

“He knew everything.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa stood behind me, frozen.

I looked at her.

“You knew too.””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t know Sofia would come here.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Vanessa looked away.

And that was enough.

I grabbed the photograph from Sofia’s hand.

The image was old.

Faded edges.

My mother was standing outside a small house I had never seen before.

She looked younger.

Happy.

And beside her was Sofia.

But there was someone else in the picture.

A little boy.

Me.

I was only five years old.

On the back of the photograph, my mother had written:

“Daniel deserves the truth. Marcus cannot be allowed to erase everything.””

My hands started shaking.

“Erase what?””

Sofia looked at Marcus.

“Tell him.””

My father stayed silent.

“Tell him what you did.””

Marcus walked away from the door.

His shoulders looked heavier than I had ever seen them.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed.

“Mistakes?””

I held up the photograph.

“You erased my entire childhood.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I threw the words back at him.

“Protect me from what?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“From losing everything.””

“You already made me lose everything.””

The silence after that hurt.

Sofia stepped inside.

“I need you to hear what your mother wanted you to know.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

Another one.

Another piece of my mother’s hidden truth.

“She left these with me before she disappeared.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give them to me?””

Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“That I would only give them to you when you found the first message yourself.””

I looked at the trophy.

The note hidden inside.

My mother had planned this.

She knew.

She knew one day I would find it.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Sofia sat down.

“Because Elena knew someone would try to stop her from telling you.””

My eyes moved to Marcus.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than any confession.

“Dad,” I said quietly.

He looked at me.

“Did you make Mom leave?””

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Sofia closed her eyes.

And I knew.

I knew before he answered.

Marcus finally spoke.

“I didn’t want her to go.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He looked broken.

“I thought I had no choice.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

One sentence that made my blood run cold.

*Ask Marcus what happened the night Elena disappeared. Ask him who was in the car.*

I looked at my father.

His face went pale.

Because he knew exactly who had sent it.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

Sofia looked at him.

“You never told him about the accident.””

Accident.

The word echoed.

“What accident?””

No one spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

I turned toward her.

And she looked more afraid than I had ever seen her.

“Your mother didn’t disappear.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was taken away.””
