Chapter 5: The Night Everyone Forgot
I couldn’t breathe.
Not because I was shocked.
Because I suddenly realized I had spent eleven years grieving the wrong story.
My mother wasn’t someone who walked away.
She was someone everyone around me had decided to hide.
“Taken away?”” I repeated.
Vanessa looked down.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No more.””
I pointed at him.
“No more half-truths. No more ‘I was protecting you.’ No more pretending you were the victim.””
Marcus flinched.
For years, I had seen my father as the man who stayed.
The man who raised me after my mother left.
But now I wondered if he was only the person who remained after he destroyed everything.
Sofia opened the envelope.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
An old one.
My hands shook as I read the headline.
*LOCAL WOMAN INJURED IN LATE-NIGHT COLLISION.*
Below it was a blurry photograph.
My mother’s car.
I felt sick.
“She survived?”” I whispered.
Sofia nodded.
“She was alive.””
My knees almost gave out.
All those years.
All those birthdays.
All those nights wondering why she abandoned me.
She had been alive.
“She tried to contact you,” Sofia said.
“Why didn’t she?””
Sofia looked at Marcus.
“Because someone made sure she couldn’t.””
The anger inside me finally broke through.
“Who?””
No one answered.
Then Marcus said quietly:
“Me.””
The room went still.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He raised his hand.
“I owe him the truth.””
I stared at him.
“Then tell me.””
He sat down.
The man who had always seemed powerful suddenly looked old.
“It was eleven years ago. Elena found out about financial problems in the company.””
“What company?””
“Our family business.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Mom?””
“She found documents showing money was being moved illegally.””
“By who?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation told me everything.
“By you?””
He looked away.
“I made choices.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You stole.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
My father.
The person who taught me right from wrong.
The person who told me honesty mattered.
Had built his life on a lie.
“Mom found out.””
Marcus nodded.
“She wanted to go to the police.””
“And you stopped her.””
“I begged her not to.””
“That’s not stopping her.””
His face tightened.
“I was scared.””
I laughed.
“You were scared?””
I looked around the room.
“You were scared, so she lost eleven years with her son?””
Marcus had no answer.
Sofia spoke softly.
“The accident happened the night Elena planned to leave with Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“Me?””
“She was taking you away.””
I looked at the floor.
Memories flashed.
A suitcase.
My mother crying.
My father arguing.
A sound outside the house.
I had forgotten.
Or maybe I had buried it.
“Why don’t I remember?””
Sofia touched my shoulder.
“Because you were five.””
She looked at Marcus.
“And because someone told you a different story.””
I turned away.
The room felt too small.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I know where Elena went after the accident.””
Everyone looked at her.
My chest tightened.
“You know?””
She nodded slowly.
“I found her.””
My voice became cold.
“When?””
“Two days after.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she asked me not to.””
I stared at her.
“My mother asked my wife to hide her from me?””
“She thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””
“Safe from who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She reached into her purse.
And pulled out a small key.
“I kept this for eleven years.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
Her hand trembled.
“The place where Elena left the rest of the truth.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“Your mother’s old house.””
The house my father told me was sold.
The house I thought no longer existed.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
May you like
This time from the unknown number.
*Don’t go there. If you open that door, you’ll find out why your mother was never allowed to come home.*
