Chapter 13: The Family Tree Built on Lies

The room went completely silent.

I stared at Vanessa.

Then at my mother.

Then back at Vanessa.

“My father?””

She nodded slowly.

“His name was Thomas Hale.””

The name hit me.

Hale.

Richard.

Victor.

A family I barely knew had been controlling pieces of my life for decades.

“How?””

Vanessa sat down.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for one person.

“After my father died, I found records in his office.””

“What kind of records?””

She swallowed.

“Documents about your family.””

I felt anger rising again.

“Everyone keeps finding things after the damage is already done.””

“I know.””

“No, Vanessa.””

My voice sharpened.

“You don’t.””

She looked at me.

And for once, she didn’t defend herself.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

She continued.

“My father was obsessed with power. He believed your grandfather’s company should have belonged to him.””

My mother nodded.

“Thomas worked with Marcus’s father for years.””

“So he knew about the inheritance?””

“Yes.””

“And he changed my records?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

I stepped away.

“Why?””

“Because when your grandfather died, the inheritance was placed under a condition.””

“What condition?””

My mother answered.

“That the oldest biological grandson would inherit everything.””

I stared at her.

“So someone changed who I was.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father was supposed to be listed as someone else.””

“Why Marcus?””

“Because Marcus was the easiest person to manipulate.””

My eyes moved toward my father.

He looked ashamed.

“I thought Thomas was helping me.””

I laughed.

“You didn’t know?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I knew about the money problems. I knew about the documents Elena found.””

He looked at my mother.

“But I didn’t know the full plan.””

My mother looked away.

“I wish I could believe that.””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

Marcus lowered his head.

“I deserve that.””

For years, I thought my father was simply cruel.

But now I saw something more complicated.

He had been weak.

And his weakness had destroyed us.

I turned to Vanessa.

“You knew all this.””

She nodded.

“Not at first.””

“When did you find out?””

“After I married you.””

My chest tightened.

“You married me while knowing?””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know who you were when we met.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked at me.

“I found out six months after our wedding.””

The betrayal felt fresh all over again.

“And you stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because by then, you weren’t an inheritance to me.””

She touched her wedding ring.

“You were my husband.””

I looked away.

I wanted to believe her.

But trust wasn’t something that returned because someone explained their reasons.

My mother slowly stood.

“Daniel, there is something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Thomas wasn’t working alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

She looked at Marcus.

He closed his eyes.

“No.””

“Dad?””

Marcus whispered:

“I know who.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked older suddenly.

“I thought Thomas was the only one.””

“Who?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

“My father’s brother.””

I searched my memory.

I had never heard about him.

“Why don’t I know him?””

“Because he disappeared before you were born.””

My mother’s face changed.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“Elena’s brother.””

The room went cold.

“I thought he died.””

My mother shook her head.

“He didn’t.””

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

A voice I had never expected.

“Daniel.””

I felt the blood leave my face.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from memory.

Not from recordings.

From my childhood.

A voice I had heard once before.

“Who is this?””

The man laughed softly.

“You really don’t remember me?””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Tell me.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“I’m the man your mother thought was dead.””
