Chapter 14: The Uncle Who Returned From The Grave
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
My mother looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Who was it?””
I looked at her.
“You know.””
Her face went pale.
“Daniel…”
“You know.””
She sat down slowly.
“My brother.””
The words felt impossible.
“Your brother?””
She nodded.
“His name was Adrian.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“I thought he died.””
My mother shook her head.
“So did I.””
The room filled with confusion.
“How can someone disappear for decades and suddenly call me?””
Richard, who had been silent, stepped forward.
“Because Adrian was never gone.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You knew?””
Richard sighed.
“I suspected.””
My anger returned.
“Of course you did.””
I looked around.
“Everyone knows everything.””
I walked toward the window.
“I’m the only person who has been living in the dark.””
My mother came closer.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
“I spent eleven years thinking you left me.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“I hated you.””
“I know.””
“I blamed myself.””
That broke her.
She covered her mouth.
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
Because seeing her cry was harder than being angry.
Richard placed a folder on the table.
“There’s something you need to see.””
I opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
My mother.
Adrian.
And my grandfather.
On the back:
“Family protects family.””
I looked at Richard.
“What does this mean?””
“It means Adrian believed your grandfather’s inheritance should have been his.””
“But he wasn’t the oldest?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Richard looked serious.
“Because Adrian believed the rules were unfair.””
“So he changed my identity?””
“He helped.””
My stomach dropped.
“Helped?””
Richard nodded.
“Thomas Hale created the documents. Adrian provided information.””
My mother whispered:
“He used my own son.””
The words hit me.
“My own son.””
I looked at her.
“You mean me?””
She nodded.
“Adrian knew about you before you were born.””
The room became colder.
“Why?””
“Because you were the key.””
I hated that word.
Key.
Like I wasn’t a person.
Like I was something everyone wanted to possess.
I slammed the folder shut.
“I’m done.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m done being a piece of paper.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“Daniel,” Vanessa said.
I stopped.
For a moment, I wanted to ignore her.
But I didn’t.
She looked at me sadly.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
“You are not an inheritance.””
She stepped closer.
“You’re not a mistake.””
Her voice broke.
“You’re the person my father spent his entire life trying to control.””
I looked at her.
“And what are you?””
She swallowed.
“The person who failed to stop him.””
The honesty hurt.
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a photo.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
It was Adrian.
Standing outside a hospital.
Holding a baby.
Me.
The message underneath said:
*Your mother told you she protected you. She lied. Ask her why she gave you away.*
I looked at my mother.
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
“What is this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t give you away.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“I saved your life.””
The words hung between us.
“How?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because when you were born…”
May you like
She looked at me.
“Someone tried to kill you.””
