Chapter 19: The Person Behind The Final Betrayal
The video froze on my father’s terrified face.
Not Marcus.
Not Elena.
My biological father.
A man who had been gone before I even knew his name.
But his final words remained.
*The person who killed me is the person you trust most.*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in that room had a reason to be afraid.
My eyes moved from one person to another.
Marcus.
Elena.
Vanessa.
Richard.
Clara.
Adrian.
Who could it be?
Who had been close enough?
Who had earned enough trust to get near him?
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from Victor.
*You’re looking at the wrong people.*
Then another line appeared.
*The person who destroyed your family has been protecting you your entire life.*
I felt cold.
Protecting me.
Those words had been repeated so many times.
But now they sounded different.
My eyes moved toward Marcus.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who lied to me.
The man who had spent years saying he was protecting me.
He noticed my expression.
“Daniel.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
His face fell.
“Listen to me.””
“I’m tired of listening.””
My mother came closer.
“Daniel, don’t make a decision based on fear.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me the truth.””
She stopped.
“Did Marcus know more than he told me?””
Silence.
That was enough.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I did.””
My heart sank.
“How much?””
He looked broken.
“More than I admitted.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus…”
He shook his head.
“No more lies.””
He looked at me.
“The night your biological father died, I was there.””
The room went silent.
I felt my hands go numb.
“You said you weren’t.””
“I said I wasn’t responsible.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Marcus looked away.
“I was there.””
My anger disappeared.
Replaced by something heavier.
Pain.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because I was trying to stop it.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
The honesty hurt.
“No, I didn’t.””
I turned away.
“Then tell me who did.””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
Then at the floor.
“The person who ordered it…”
He stopped.
Everyone waited.
“Was Elena.””
The room exploded into chaos.
“What?””
My mother stepped back like she had been slapped.
“No.””
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Not because she wanted him dead.””
Everyone stared.
“Then explain.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“She asked me to help hide the truth.””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because if they knew the baby survived…”
She looked at me.
“They would come after Daniel.””
I stared.
“But the video says someone killed him.””
Marcus nodded.
“It does.””
“So?””
He looked at the frozen screen.
“Your father wasn’t talking about the person who caused the accident.””
A pause.
“He was talking about the person who betrayed him.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Clara.
My biological mother.
Everyone froze.
Clara’s face turned pale.
“No.””
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
“I’m sorry.””
Clara stepped back.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
My mother looked confused.
“Marcus, what are you saying?””
He took a breath.
“Clara made a deal.””
The room went cold.
“With who?””
Marcus looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“With Victor’s father.””
I stared at Clara.
“No.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
The words echoed.
The same words everyone used.
“No choice.””
I looked at her.
“What did you do?””
Clara covered her face.
“I gave them information.””
“What information?””
“Where your father was meeting Richard.””
My stomach dropped.
“You led them to him.””
She shook her head desperately.
“I didn’t know they would kill him.””
The pain in her voice sounded real.
But the damage was already done.
My biological mother had betrayed my biological father.
My adoptive father had hidden the truth.
My adoptive mother had hidden my identity.
Everyone had failed me in a different way.
Then Elena stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
She was crying.
“But there is something Marcus doesn’t know.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She looked at Clara.
Then at me.
“The person who ordered your father’s death wasn’t Victor’s father.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
Elena took a shaky breath.
“It was someone who knew where you were every day.””
Someone who was close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who had spent years beside me.
Then the front door opened.
A familiar voice said:
“She’s right.””
Everyone turned.
Victor stood there.
Free.
Smiling.
May you like
And beside him was the one person I never expected to see.
Vanessa.
