Chapter 6: The Person I Never Suspected
I stared at the signature for almost a full minute.
My mind searched for another explanation.
A mistake.
A fake.
Anything.
But the handwriting was unmistakable.
My own.
I looked at Robert.
“What is this?””
He tapped the document.
“Your life insurance amendment.””
“I never signed this.””
“That’s what I assumed.””
I picked up the paper.
My signature was there.
Perfect.
Except I knew one thing.
I had never written it.
Someone had copied me.
Someone who had access to my personal documents.
Someone close enough to study my handwriting.
I thought about Claire.
Then Daniel.
Then everyone who had ever been inside my house.
“Who submitted this?””
Robert checked the file.
“The request came through your home computer.””
My blood ran cold.
“My home computer?””
“Yes.””
I looked through the glass window toward the waiting room.
Mason was sitting beside Lily.
Protecting her.
Not hiding.
Not lying.
For the first time, I realized something important.
I had spent the last hour wondering if Mason was part of the betrayal.
But Mason had been the one trying to save us.
Robert lowered his voice.
“Michael, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“The person who accessed your computer used a password.””
“What password?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Your daughter’s birthday.””
I closed my eyes.
That password was something only a few people knew.
Claire.
Daniel.
And someone else.
Someone who had been in my house more times than anyone.
I walked back into the waiting room.
“Mason.””
He looked up.
“Yes?””
“Who knew my computer password?””
His expression changed.
“Your password?””
“Yes.””
He thought carefully.
“Mom knew.””
“Anyone else?””
He hesitated.
Then his face went pale.
“Daniel.””
I nodded slowly.
Mason looked confused.
“Why would Daniel know?””
Because I told him.
The memory came back.
A year earlier, Daniel helped me set up my new computer after mine crashed.
I had trusted him.
I had sat beside him.
I had given him access.
My best friend.
The man who knew everything.
The man who knew exactly how to destroy me.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*Stop digging, Michael. You don’t know what you’re about to uncover.*
Then another message arrived.
A photo.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
It was a picture of Lily sleeping.
Taken inside our house.
Last night.
My hands started shaking.
Someone had been watching us.
Someone had been close enough to enter my daughter’s room.
I immediately called Robert.
“Mason, take Lily and go with my attorney’s assistant. Right now.””
Mason stood.
“What’s happening?””
I showed him the photo.
His face changed.
“They were here?””
I nodded.
And then something happened that I would never forget.
Mason stepped in front of Lily.
Like a wall.
Like a real brother.
“I won’t let them touch her.””
I believed him.
Because unlike the adults who promised to protect us, Mason had actually done it.
Then my phone rang.
This time, it wasn’t a message.
It was a call.
The screen showed a name.
Claire.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was different.
No anger.
No confidence.
Just panic.
“Michael, listen to me.””
I said nothing.
“You need to get out of the house.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“There’s something you don’t know.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
A shaky breath.
“Because Daniel isn’t trying to take your money.””
Silence.
“Then what is he trying to do?””
Claire whispered the words that changed everything.
“He’s trying to erase the evidence of what happened to his last business partner.””
I froze.
“His last business partner?””
“Yes.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who was he?””
Claire answered quietly.
“Your first wife’s brother.””
I couldn’t move.
Because suddenly this was no longer about money.
No longer about my marriage.
No longer about betrayal.
It was about a secret that had been buried for years.

And according to Claire…
Daniel was willing to kill again to keep it buried.
