Chapter 5: The Betrayal in My Own Home

The name on the screen made my hands go numb.

Mason Carter.

My stepson.

I stared at it.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

“Mason?””

He looked over immediately.

“What?””

I turned the laptop toward him.

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Shock.

“I didn’t do that.””

I watched him carefully.

For one terrible second, I wondered if I had been wrong about everything.

The videos.

The recordings.

The warnings.

Could this all be part of something bigger?

Mason stepped closer.

“Michael, I swear I didn’t.””

“Then why is your name on this?””

He looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Daddy, don’t be mad at him.””

I looked at her.

She wasn’t defending him because she understood money.

She was defending him because he was the only person who had protected her.

I closed the laptop.

“Mason, sit down.””

He did.

His hands were shaking.

“I need the truth.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“Then start from the beginning.””

Mason took a deep breath.

“When Mom married you, she made me sign some papers.””

“What papers?””

“She said they were normal family documents.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did you read them?””

He looked embarrassed.

“No.””

“What did she tell you?””

“That it was about school and medical decisions.””

I felt anger rising.

“Mason, you’re seventeen. You can’t sign away anything without understanding it.””

“I know that now.””

He looked down.

“But I found something in her room last month.””

“What?””

“A copy of the documents.””

He swallowed.

“They weren’t school papers.””

I leaned forward.

“What were they?””

His voice became quiet.

“Power of attorney.””

The words hit like a punch.

Claire had been preparing.

Not just stealing money.

Controlling everything.

“She wanted access to your accounts,” Mason said.

“But she needed another person’s signature.””

“Yours.””

He nodded.

I stood up and walked toward the window.

The woman I slept beside every night had spent months planning how to destroy me.

But the question remained.

Who helped her?

I called my attorney.

After explaining everything, he told me to come to his office immediately.

Before we left, Mason stopped me.

“Michael.””

I turned.

“I need to tell you something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The night I recorded Claire talking about the insurance money…”

I waited.

“I wasn’t the only one there.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who else was there?””

“I saw someone outside.””

“Who?””

He looked nervous.

“I thought I was wrong.””

“Mason.””

He took a breath.

“It was Daniel.””

The room went quiet.

Again.

This time, I felt something colder than anger.

Fear.

Because Daniel wasn’t just involved.

He was watching.

At the attorney’s office, we reviewed everything.

The recordings.

The notebook.

The documents.

My attorney, Robert Hayes, didn’t say much while reading.

That scared me more than if he had reacted.

Finally, he looked up.

“Michael, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“These people weren’t planning a divorce.””

My throat tightened.

“What were they planning?””

Robert closed the folder.

“Your death.””

The word hung in the room.

Lily was in the waiting area with Mason, so she didn’t hear.

But I did.

And suddenly every strange moment from the last few months came back.

Claire insisting I take certain supplements.

Daniel suggesting I increase my life insurance.

The argument where Claire said I worked too hard and needed “something to help me sleep.””

My attorney continued.

“The insurance policy was recently changed.””

I stared at him.

“Changed how?””

“The beneficiary.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Robert looked at the document.

“Claire Carter.””

I felt sick.

Then he turned another page.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

I looked at him.

“What could possibly be worse?””

He slid the paper across the desk.

At the bottom was a signature.

May you like

A signature that proved someone inside my family had been helping Claire from the beginning.

And it wasn’t Mason.
