Chapter 15: The Woman Who Started the War
I drove to the old Carter warehouse with one thought repeating in my mind.
Trust no one.
Not Robert.
Not Nathan.
Not Claire.
Maybe not even myself.
Because every person I loved had been connected to this nightmare somehow.
Sarah sat beside me.
“You’re quiet.””
I stared at the road.
“I’m trying to remember what the truth feels like.””
She didn’t answer.
Because she understood.
When we reached the warehouse, the doors were already open.
That was the first warning.
The second was the silence.
No guards.
No movement.
Nothing.
A trap.
I stepped inside.
“Michael.””
Claire’s voice echoed.
She walked out from the shadows.
For a moment, I forgot everything.
The anger.
The betrayal.
The pain.
I only saw the woman who had once held my hand.
Then I remembered Lily crying on the kitchen floor.
My expression changed.
“Where is Mason?””
Claire looked exhausted.
“He’s safe.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
She looked down.
“I don’t deserve that.””
The answer surprised me.
“What happened to you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I got greedy.””
I said nothing.
“I thought Daniel was giving me a way out.””
“A way out?””
“From everything.””
She laughed bitterly.
“I grew up with nothing. I spent my whole life feeling invisible.””
I stared at her.
“So you hurt a child?””
Her face broke.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””
“But you did.””
“I know.””
For the first time, Claire didn’t defend herself.
She just looked broken.
“Daniel told me he could give me security. He told me you would never know.””
“And the starvation?””
Her eyes closed.
“That was never part of the plan.””
I felt anger rise.
“There was a plan?””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
Silence.
“The plan was to make you believe Lily was difficult. That she needed discipline. That you were too busy to notice.””
My stomach turned.
“And Daniel?””
“He wanted control.””
“Of what?””
Claire hesitated.
“Everything.””
A noise came from behind us.
I turned.
Robert stepped out.
And behind him was Daniel.
My worst fears became real.
Daniel smiled.
“Finally.””
I stared at him.
“You.””
He looked almost disappointed.
“Michael, you always were too trusting.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Daniel, this wasn’t supposed to happen.””
He looked at her.
“You were never part of the final plan.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
Daniel smiled.
“You really thought you were important?””
Claire backed away.
“You promised me.””
“I promised you what you wanted to hear.””
The betrayal on her face was almost painful to watch.
Even after everything, she had believed him.
Daniel turned to me.
“You see, Michael? Everyone betrays everyone eventually.””
I looked around.
“Where’s Mason?””
Daniel smiled.
“Close.””
My fists tightened.
“Bring him out.””
Daniel ignored me.
“You want to know the truth about Emma?””
My heart stopped.
He noticed.
“Good.””
He stepped closer.
“Because that’s the one thing nobody told you.””
Sarah moved beside me.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked at her.
Then back at me.
“I didn’t kill Emma.””
I stared.
“I just gave her a choice.””
“What choice?””
Daniel smiled.
“The choice to disappear…”
He paused.
“…or watch her daughter die.””
My blood turned cold.
And before I could react, the warehouse lights switched on.
Across the room stood Mason.
Alive.
But beside him was another person.
A woman.
A woman I had spent six years mourning.
May you like
Emma.
And she was holding a gun pointed at Daniel.
