Chapter 11: The Truth Emma Left Behind
We drove for almost an hour without speaking.
Sarah sat in the passenger seat holding the folder against her chest.
I sat in the back, staring out the window.
My entire life had become a collection of lies.
Claire.
Daniel.
Nathan.
Even Emma.
The woman I thought I had lost forever.
I didn’t know what hurt more.
That everyone had lied to me.
Or that maybe they thought they were protecting me.
Finally, Sarah spoke.
“We need to go somewhere safe.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
“A place Emma trusted.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew her well.””
Sarah looked down.
“She saved my life.””
I waited.
“Daniel found out I was investigating him. Emma helped me disappear.””
“Why didn’t she come home?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because she tried.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“Emma came back after the accident.””
I stopped breathing.
“When?””
“Two days later.””
I gripped the seat.
“Why didn’t I see her?””
“Because Daniel made sure you didn’t.””
The anger came back.
“What did he do?””
Sarah looked at me.
“He showed you evidence that Emma died.””
I shook my head.
“The hospital records…”
“Fake.””
“The funeral?””
“An empty casket.””
I closed my eyes.
My knees felt weak.
For six years, I had mourned someone who was alive.
“She wanted to tell you the truth,” Sarah continued.
“Then why didn’t she?””
Sarah was quiet.
Then she said:
“Because someone close to you convinced her that coming back would put Lily in danger.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
Nathan.
But I couldn’t understand.
Why would my brother keep Emma away?
When we arrived at an old cabin outside the city, Sarah unlocked the door.
Inside were boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Photos.
Documents.
Letters.
Evidence.
“She collected everything,” Sarah said.
I picked up a letter.
My name was written on the front.
Michael.
My hands shook.
“Why didn’t she send this?””
Sarah looked away.
“Because she never got the chance.””
I opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Michael,
If you are reading this, something happened that stopped me from coming home.
Please believe me when I say I never left you.
I never stopped loving you.
But Daniel knows too much.
And the person helping him is someone we both trust.
My breathing stopped.
I read the next line.
The person helping him is not doing it for money.
They are doing it because they are afraid of what will happen if Daniel falls.
I looked at Sarah.
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I continued reading.
Emma mentioned Lily.
She mentioned Daniel.
Then one sentence made me freeze.
*Protect Lily. She knows more than she realizes.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah frowned.
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A small voice spoke.
“Daddy?””
My blood went cold.
“Lily?””
Her voice was shaking.
“He’s here.””
I stood instantly.
“Who’s there?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“The man from the picture.””
I felt panic explode through me.
“Mason! Where are you?””
A different voice answered.
Daniel.
“Hello, Michael.””
I couldn’t speak.
“Your daughter is safe.””
My fists clenched.
“If you touch her—”
“You still don’t understand.””
“Where is she?””
Daniel laughed softly.
“She’s with someone who has been protecting her longer than you know.””
I looked at Sarah.
Then I heard another voice in the background.
A woman’s voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in six years.
A voice that broke my heart.
“Michael…”
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Because I knew that voice.
Emma.
