Chapter 4: The Face Behind the Betrayal

The photograph slipped from my fingers before I even understood what I was seeing.

For a moment, my brain refused to accept it.

The man smiling in the picture was sitting at our family barbecue three months earlier. He had held Lily’s hand while she showed him her drawings. He had laughed at my jokes. He had looked me in the eyes and called me his friend.

Daniel Brooks.

My business partner.

My closest friend.

“No,” I whispered.

Mason stood beside me.

“You know him?””

I couldn’t answer.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Daniel was the person I trusted with my company accounts. The person I called when I needed advice. The person who had been there when I lost my first wife and struggled to raise Lily alone.

And now his picture was hidden inside my wife’s secret notebook.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy, is he bad?””

I forced myself to kneel beside her.

“I don’t know yet, sweetheart.””

But deep down, I already knew.

People didn’t hide innocent photographs in secret notebooks.

I opened the notebook again.

The pages were filled with numbers.

Bank transfers.

Dates.

Property details.

And notes written in Claire’s handwriting.

“Michael’s trust level: high.””

I felt my stomach twist.

Another line read:

“Wait until the account transfer is complete.””

Mason leaned closer.

“What account?””

I turned the page.

There it was.

A list of my personal assets.

The house.

My savings.

My life insurance policy.

Everything.

Claire had been tracking my entire life like she was preparing a business deal.

Not a marriage.

A deal.

My phone suddenly rang.

The sound made all three of us jump.

I looked at the screen.

Daniel.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Mason whispered, “Don’t answer.””

I stared at his name.

Part of me wanted to scream.

Another part wanted answers.

I pressed the speaker button.

“Hello?””

“Michael?”” Daniel’s voice sounded calm. Almost too calm.

“I heard there was some trouble at home.””

I looked at Claire, who was standing near the door.

She had gone completely silent.

“How did you hear that?””

A pause.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

“Claire called me.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why would my wife call you?””

Another pause.

“Michael, I think you’re upset. You need to calm down and think clearly.””

The way he said it made something inside me snap.

“You knew.””

Silence.

“You knew what was happening in this house.””

“Michael—”

“You knew Lily was being hurt.””

His breathing changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I looked at the photograph.

“No. I think I finally stopped making mistakes.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Listen to me carefully. Whatever Mason showed you, it’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I hung up.

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

I turned toward her.

“No. I understand now.””

“You’re destroying our family because of a teenager’s lies.””

Mason looked hurt.

But before I could respond, Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

Her face was pale.

“There’s something I never told you.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She looked toward Claire.

“She told me if I ever told you about the food, she would send Mason away.””

Mason froze.

“What?””

Lily started crying.

“She said you weren’t my real daddy if I made problems.””

I felt something break inside me.

I looked at Claire.

“How could you say that to her?””

Claire’s expression flickered.

For the first time, she looked almost afraid.

But then her fear disappeared.

“You have no idea what you’ve married into.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled sadly.

A cold, empty smile.

“You think Daniel is the only person who knows about your money?””

The silence returned.

“What are you saying?””

Claire walked toward the door.

“I’m saying you should check who has access to your accounts before you accuse anyone else.””

Then she left.

I stood there, frozen.

Because despite everything she had done, one thing bothered me.

She wasn’t scared of being exposed.

She was scared I would find something.

I grabbed my laptop.

And when I opened my bank account, I saw a notification waiting.

A transfer request.

Submitted two days earlier.

A request to move everything I owned.

And the person who approved the request wasn’t Claire.

It wasn’t Daniel.

May you like

It was someone else.

Someone whose name I never expected to see.
