Chapter 12: The Wife Who Came Back From the Dead

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

The world narrowed down to one sound.

Emma’s voice.

“Michael?””

My hand trembled around the phone.

“Emma?””

A quiet sob came from the other end.

“Yes.””

Six years.

Six years of imagining her voice.

Six years of replaying old memories.

And now she was there.

Alive.

But not home.

Not beside me.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then Emma whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words hurt more than anything else.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, don’t say that. Don’t apologize. Just tell me where you are.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel is listening.””

I looked around the cabin.

Sarah’s face had gone pale.

“Is Lily with you?””

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“But Daniel said—”

“He’s using her.””

My stomach dropped.

“Using her for what?””

Emma was silent.

Then she said:

“For what I found.””

I closed my eyes.

“Emma, I need you to explain everything.””

“I will.””

Her voice trembled.

“But first you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Lily isn’t just a target because she’s your daughter.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She was there the night I disappeared.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“Michael, Lily saw something.””

My heart pounded.

“She was two years old.””

“I know.””

“Emma, she couldn’t remember.””

“She remembered enough.””

I felt sick.

“What did she see?””

Emma whispered:

“She saw Daniel.””

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

Sarah looked at me.

“Michael?””

I ignored her.

“What did Daniel do?””

Emma didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

And that terrified me.

“Emma.””

Her voice became quiet.

“He wasn’t alone.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who was with him?””

Before she could answer, the call cut off.

I stared at the phone.

“No.””

I called back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Sarah moved closer.

“What did she say?””

I looked at her.

“Lily saw Daniel the night Emma disappeared.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“But that means…”

I nodded.

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

A sound came from outside.

We all froze.

A car door closing.

Sarah reached for the folder.

“We need to leave.””

I looked toward the window.

“How did they find us?””

She didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because it meant she knew.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

*You should have stayed out of the past.*

Another message followed.

A photo.

Mason.

Sitting in a room.

Alive.

But tied to a chair.

My heart stopped.

Then another message.

*Come alone if you want your family back.*

I stared at the picture.

Mason.

The boy who protected my daughter.

The boy who risked everything for the truth.

I couldn’t leave him.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

“Michael, this is what he wants.””

“I know.””

“It’s a trap.””

“I know.””

“You’ll die.””

I looked at the photo again.

Then I thought about Lily.

About Emma.

About Mason.

For years, I thought protecting my family meant working harder.

Providing more.

Keeping everyone comfortable.

I was wrong.

Sometimes protecting your family means walking straight into the darkness to bring them home.

I picked up the folder.

“Where is he?””

Sarah stared at me.

“You’re really going?””

“Yes.””

She looked afraid.

“Then there’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

She opened the final page of Emma’s evidence file.

A document I hadn’t seen before.

A name was written at the top.

Not Daniel.

Not Nathan.

Not Claire.

Someone else.

Someone who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

Sarah whispered:

“The person Daniel works for…”

I looked at the name.

And felt my entire body go cold.

Because I knew that person.

May you like

Everyone did.

And they had been watching my family fall apart from the closest seat in the room.
