Chapter 13: The Person Behind Everything

The name on the document felt impossible.

I stared at it until the letters blurred.

I wanted my mind to reject it.

To tell me this was another trick.

Another lie.

But I knew that name.

Everyone in my family knew that name.

Because it belonged to someone who had been sitting beside us at birthdays.

Someone who had watched Lily blow out candles.

Someone who had comforted me when I thought I lost Emma forever.

*Robert Hayes.*

My attorney.

My friend.

The man who had guided me through every legal battle of my life.

The man who had just spent hours pretending to help me uncover the truth.

I looked at Sarah.

“No.””

She didn’t say anything.

Because she knew.

“You’re wrong.””

Sarah shook her head slowly.

“Emma wrote this herself.””

I looked back at the page.

There was Emma’s handwriting.

Real.

Personal.

Terrified.

*Robert is not protecting you. He is protecting the secret.*

My chest tightened.

I thought about every conversation.

Every document Robert reviewed.

Every moment I trusted him.

He had known exactly what I would find.

Because he was helping me find it.

I grabbed my phone.

No signal.

Of course.

“Michael,” Sarah said quietly.

I looked at her.

“We need to assume everything we told Robert was heard by Daniel.””

A horrible realization settled over me.

“The attorney’s office.””

She nodded.

“He knew where we were going.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Robert’s voice came through.

Calm.

Professional.

The same voice I had trusted.

“Michael.””

My blood turned cold.

“How long?””

A pause.

“Long enough.””

I laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

“Did you enjoy watching me destroy my own family looking for answers?””

“Michael, you need to understand—”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You need to understand something. I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Silence.

Finally, Robert said:

“Because your father made a promise.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What promise?””

Robert sighed.

“You think Daniel is the villain because he stole money. You think Nathan betrayed you because he was afraid. You think Claire hurt Lily because she wanted wealth.””

His voice became colder.

“They were all just pieces.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“And you?””

“I’m the person who made sure the pieces moved where they needed to.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

I felt sick.

“Where is Mason?””

Robert didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Where is my son?””

A small laugh.

“Your son?””

The way he said it made me angry.

“Yes. My son.””

“You really still don’t understand, do you?””

“What?””

“Ask yourself why Mason was able to record Claire so easily.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“Ask yourself why he was always nearby when secrets appeared.””

I felt a sudden wave of confusion.

“No.””

Robert continued.

“Mason wasn’t protecting you from the beginning.””

I looked at Sarah.

She looked just as confused.

“He was looking for something.””

“What?””

“The same thing Emma was looking for.””

My heart raced.

“What thing?””

Robert’s voice lowered.

“The original evidence.””

The call ended.

I stood there, frozen.

Sarah spoke.

“Do you believe him?””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to say Robert was lying.

But one thought kept bothering me.

The notebook.

The recordings.

The timing.

Everything.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Mason.

*Don’t believe anything Robert says. I know where the evidence is.*

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*But I need you to know the truth about me first.*

Then a video file appeared.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Mason appeared on screen.

Not trapped.

Not afraid.

Just sitting alone in a dark room.

“Michael,” he said.

His voice was different.

Older.

“He’s going to tell you I was involved.””

I held my breath.

“He’s going to tell you I was spying on your family.””

May you like

Mason looked directly into the camera.

“And he’s right.””
