Chapter 10: The Brother in the Shadows

Nathan stood in the doorway like he belonged there.

Like he had always belonged in every secret room, every hidden conversation, every moment where my life quietly changed without my knowledge.

I stared at him.

My brother.

The man who held my daughter after Emma died.

The man who told me he understood my pain.

The man who had just walked into a room where I was about to learn my wife might still be alive.

“Michael,” Nathan said again.

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“How long?””

His expression changed.

“Michael—”

“How long have you known?””

The silence answered before he did.

Sarah stepped backward.

“You followed him.””

Nathan looked at her.

“You should have stayed away.””

My heart dropped.

“You know Sarah?””

Nathan didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Everything I believed about my family was collapsing piece by piece.

“You knew she was alive.””

Nathan looked at me.

His eyes were tired.

Not guilty.

Tired.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than any lie.

I stepped toward him.

“You let me believe my wife was dead.””

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

My voice echoed through the empty coffee shop.

“You watched me bury her.””

Nathan looked down.

“You watched Lily grow up without her mother.””

“I know.””

“You watched me break.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t stand there and tell me you had no choice.””

For the first time, anger flashed across his face.

“You think I wanted any of this?””

I stopped.

Nathan took a breath.

“You don’t know what Emma found.””

Sarah interrupted.

“She found the truth about Daniel.””

Nathan looked at her sharply.

“Stop.””

“No,” Sarah said.

“He deserves to know.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Nathan closed his eyes.

Then he spoke.

“Daniel wasn’t just stealing money from the company.””

I waited.

“He was covering up something that happened years before you ever met him.””

“What?””

Nathan looked at me.

“Your father’s death.””

The room went completely silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“My father?””

I hadn’t heard that name connected to anything in years.

My father died when I was twenty-three.

A heart attack.

That was the official story.

“What does my father have to do with Daniel?””

Nathan swallowed.

“Daniel knew him.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Nathan looked away.

“He worked for him.””

The memories came rushing back.

My father’s company.

His sudden financial problems.

The arguments between my parents.

The year everything fell apart.

“You’re saying Daniel was involved with my father?””

Nathan nodded.

“Your father discovered Daniel was stealing from him.””

Sarah opened the folder.

“Daniel destroyed anyone who threatened him.””

I looked at Nathan.

“And you?””

Nathan’s face changed.

“I was young.””

“You were old enough to know right from wrong.””

He flinched.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice broke.

“You helped cover this up.””

Nathan didn’t deny it.

“Because Daniel threatened you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would destroy you too.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you protected me by lying to me?””

Nathan looked at me.

“I protected you by keeping you alive.””

The words chilled me.

Before I could answer, Sarah suddenly looked toward the window.

Her face changed.

“What is it?””

She whispered:

“We need to leave.””

I turned.

“What?””

A black SUV had stopped outside.

My heart started pounding.

Nathan looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“They found us.””

“Who?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

The front door shook.

Someone was trying to open it.

Sarah grabbed the folder.

“Michael, if you want answers, you need to trust me.””

I looked at Nathan.

The man I had trusted my entire life.

The man who betrayed me.

The man who might have saved me.

I didn’t know which one was real anymore.

The door handle moved.

Nathan stepped forward.

“I’ll hold them off.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

Because for the first time, he looked like my brother again.

“Because I failed Emma.””

The door began to crack open.

Nathan pushed against it.

“Don’t make me fail Lily too.””

Sarah pulled me toward the back exit.

As we ran, I heard the front door break.

Then I heard a voice.

A voice I recognized.

Daniel.

“Find Michael.””

I stopped for half a second.

Because Daniel wasn’t shouting.

He wasn’t panicking.

He sounded calm.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

May you like

And then he said something that made my blood freeze.

“His daughter is the key.””
