Chapter 8: The Paper Jason Signed

I read the document three times.

Then a fourth.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Temporary guardianship.

Jason’s signature.

A legal agreement giving Diane certain rights over Lily if something happened to us.

I looked up.

Jason was still standing by the window.

“Did you sign this?””

He froze.

Slowly, he turned around.

His face told me everything.

“Yes.””

The word felt like a slap.

“When?””

“Three days after Lily was born.””

I stared at him.

“I was in the hospital.””

“I know.””

“I was recovering from giving birth.””

“I know.””

“You signed something involving our daughter while I was barely able to walk.””

Jason’s eyes filled with regret.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Do you understand how exhausting it is to hear that?””

He stepped closer.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

The truth hurt both of us.

But it needed to be said.

Jason sat down.

“My grandfather was dying. He wanted to make sure Lily was protected.””

“Protected from who?””

He looked away.

I already knew.

“From my mother.””

That surprised me.

“Your grandfather knew?””

Jason nodded.

“He knew what she was like.””

“Then why would he put Diane in charge?””

“Because he didn’t trust anyone else in the family.””

I picked up the document again.

“And you signed?””

“I was twenty-nine. Exhausted. My grandfather was dying. My mother kept telling me it was just paperwork.””

I looked at the signature.

A signature that had changed my daughter’s future.

“Did you read it?””

Jason didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

A knock came at the door.

We both turned.

Emma looked through the window.

“Someone is outside.””

My stomach tightened.

Jason walked over.

His expression changed.

“It’s my mother.””

Of course.

Diane stood outside holding a folder.

Not angry.

Not screaming.

Calm.

That scared me more.

Jason opened the door but stayed between us.

“What do you want?””

Diane smiled.

“I want to talk to my family.””

“You lost that right.””

Her expression hardened slightly.

Then she looked past him.

At me.

“Sarah, you don’t understand what’s happening.””

I almost laughed.

“You’re right. I don’t understand why you hit my child.””

Diane sighed.

“Still dramatic.””

Jason stepped forward.

“Leave.””

She looked at him.

The disappointment in her eyes was obvious.

“You’re choosing her?””

Jason’s voice was steady.

“I’m choosing Lily.””

For the first time, Diane looked genuinely shocked.

Then she held up the folder.

“Interesting.””

“What is that?””

She smiled.

“Something you should have shown your wife years ago.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Diane opened the folder.

Inside were financial documents.

Trust papers.

Legal statements.

“You think this is about money,” she said.

“Because it is,” I replied.

She shook her head.

“No.””

She looked directly at Jason.

“This is about responsibility.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Explain.””

Diane stepped closer.

“Your daughter’s trust was created with one condition.””

Jason went pale.

“What?””

Diane smiled.

“She cannot inherit it unless her parents prove they can provide a stable environment.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“What does that mean?””

Diane looked at me.

“It means every argument, every emotional outburst, every unstable reaction can be used.””

I stared at her.

“You’ve been collecting evidence.””

She didn’t deny it.

Instead, she smiled.

“I’ve been protecting my granddaughter.””

“No,” I said.

My voice became quiet.

“You’ve been building a case against me.””

Diane’s smile faded.

Then she said the sentence that confirmed everything.

“Sometimes the only way to save a child is to remove the person hurting them.””

Jason stepped forward.

“You’re sick.””

Diane looked at him.

“You signed the papers.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You agreed that I could intervene.””

I looked at Jason.

He looked horrified.

“I never agreed to take Lily from Sarah.””

Diane smiled.

“You agreed to whatever was necessary.””

Then she turned toward me.

“Ask your husband what else he signed.””

My eyes moved back to Jason.

“Jason?””

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“Tell me.””

May you like

He whispered:

“There’s another document.””
