Chapter 18: The Last Secret Between Us
I waited until we got home.
I didn’t ask in the car.
I didn’t ask in front of Lily.
I waited until the house was quiet.
Then I turned to Jason.
“What did you do?””
He knew immediately.
His face changed.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I am done discovering my life in pieces.””
He sat down.
“I didn’t hurt Lily.””
“I know.””
The words surprised him.
“But that doesn’t mean you didn’t hurt me.””
Jason looked away.
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then he spoke.
“After Lily was born, my mother threatened me.””
“With what?””
“She said if I didn’t cooperate, she would expose something.””
“What?””
He swallowed.
“The accident.””
I froze.
“The accident with your father?””
“Yes.””
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Jason looked at his hands.
“Because I wasn’t the one driving.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I lied.””
The room felt colder.
“My father was driving.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did you tell everyone you were?””
“Because my father was drunk.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“He made me take responsibility.””
Jason’s voice cracked.
“He told me if I didn’t, my grandfather would cut him off.””
“And you protected him.””
“I was young.””
“You were an adult.””
“I know.””
The honesty hurt.
But I needed more.
“How does this involve Lily?””
Jason looked up.
“Because Diane used it against me.””
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“She threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
“She said she would tell everyone I was responsible.””
I shook my head.
“So she controlled you.””
“Yes.””
“And you let her.””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not the truth I wanted.
The truth I needed.
I sat down across from him.
“For years, you chose silence.””
Jason nodded.
“I did.””
“Why?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Because I thought keeping the family together mattered more than telling the truth.””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
“And now?””
He followed my gaze.
“Now I know a family built on lies isn’t something worth saving.””
For the first time, I believed him.
Not because he said the right thing.
Because he had finally lost the ability to hide.
The next day, Rachel called.
“Sarah.””
Her voice sounded serious.
“What happened?””
“We received another filing.””
My heart sank.
“From Diane?””
“Yes.””
“What now?””
A pause.
“She is claiming Jason is unfit.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Rachel continued.
“She is using the accident.””
Jason closed his eyes.
Of course.
The final weapon.
“She waited until now,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“Because she knew we would fight.””
Rachel was quiet.
Then:
“Sarah, there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“The evidence Diane submitted…”
I felt cold.
“What about it?””
“It includes a witness.””
“Who?””
Rachel answered.
“Your husband’s father.””
Robert.
I looked at Jason.
His face went completely blank.
Because suddenly we understood.
Diane hadn’t lost.
She had been saving her strongest weapon.
And this time…
May you like
she wasn’t coming after me.
She was coming after Jason.
