Chapter 4: The Name On The Message

The message on Jason’s phone was only seven words long.

But those seven words made my entire body go cold.

*“We need to discuss custody of Lily.””*

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked at Jason.

“She’s already thinking about custody?””

Jason didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

His silence was becoming its own language.

A language I was finally learning to understand.

“She’s been planning this,” I whispered.

Jason ran a hand through his hair.

“I didn’t know it went this far.””

I almost laughed.

The sound that came out wasn’t happiness.

It was disbelief.

“You keep saying that.””

“Sarah…”

“No, Jason. You keep saying you didn’t know. You didn’t know she would hit Lily.

You didn’t know she was collecting information. You didn’t know she wanted control.””

I stepped closer.

“But somehow, every time something terrible happened, you were standing right there.””

His eyes dropped.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Because anger meant he still believed he was right.

Guilt meant he knew.

“I was scared,” he said quietly.

I crossed my arms.

“Of what?””

“My mom.””

The answer surprised me.

Not because it made me forgive him.

Because it finally explained him.

Jason had spent his entire life trying to avoid his mother’s disappointment.

But now I understood something.

His fear of disappointing Diane had become more important than protecting his own daughter.

“I need you to understand something,” I said.

He looked up.

“Lily doesn’t need a father who regrets things after they happen.””

His face tightened.

“She needs someone who stops them before they happen.””

Jason nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“No. You know now.””

The difference mattered.

The next morning, I called a family law attorney.

I didn’t tell Jason at first.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed one thing in my life that wasn’t controlled by someone else.

A decision.

A choice.

When I arrived at the office, I expected to feel nervous.

Instead, I felt strangely calm.

The attorney, Rachel Bennett, listened without interrupting.

She reviewed the recordings.

The photographs of Lily’s bruise.

The timeline I had written.

The messages Diane had sent.

When she finished, she placed the folder down.

“Sarah, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Do you believe your husband will protect your daughter if his mother pressures him?””

The question hit harder than I expected.

Because I knew the answer.

“I don’t know.””

Rachel nodded.

“That’s important.””

“Important how?””

“Because custody decisions are not only about who committed the harmful act. They’re also about who allowed it to happen.””

My fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.

“I never wanted this.””

Rachel’s expression softened.

“Most people don’t.””

After the meeting, I sat in my car for almost twenty minutes.

I watched people walk past.

Parents holding children’s hands.

A father carrying his little girl on his shoulders.

A mother laughing with her son outside a bakery.

Normal moments.

Moments I used to believe were guaranteed.

Then my phone rang.

Jason.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

“Sarah.””

His voice sounded different.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“What happened?””

“My mom came to the house.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“She wanted to talk.””

“Did you let her in?””

A pause.

That pause told me everything.

“Jason.””

“I thought maybe we could calm things down.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He still believed conversations could fix someone who had already made choices.

“What did she say?””

“She said she knows you’re trying to take Lily away.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“And what did you say?””

Another pause.

Then:

“I told her she needed to leave.””

For the first time in days, I felt a tiny crack in the wall around my heart.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

I looked out the windshield.

“Why now?””

Jason was quiet.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Because I found what she was really recording.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

“She wasn’t just recording you.””

The silence between us stretched.

“She was recording Lily.””

A cold wave moved through me.

“What?””

“She had cameras.””

I sat up straight.

“Where?””

“In my parents’ house.””

I couldn’t speak.

Jason’s voice lowered.

“And Sarah…”

“What?””

“I think she had a reason.””

I felt a knot form in my chest.

“What reason?””

Jason swallowed.

“She wasn’t trying to collect evidence against you.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was trying to collect something against Lily.””
