Chapter 13: The Deadline Hidden In The Trust

For a few seconds after Rachel spoke, I couldn’t move.

The room around me continued normally.

The refrigerator hummed.

The clock on the wall ticked.

Lily laughed quietly while stacking her blocks on the carpet.

But all I could hear was one word.

Diane.

“She controls the transfer?”” I finally asked.

Rachel sighed.

“Temporarily.””

“Temporarily?””

“Yes. The original trust structure gave her a limited role.””

I stood up.

“A limited role that she abused.””

“Exactly.””

My eyes moved toward Lily.

She was three years old now.

Three years old.

And somehow, before she could even understand what money meant, adults had already started fighting over it.

“When does the transfer happen?”” I asked.

Rachel was quiet.

“Sarah…”

“When?””

“On the final day of the month.””

I looked at the calendar.

Two days away.

My stomach dropped.

“She’s running out of time.””

“Yes.””

That was the part that scared me.

Diane wasn’t acting randomly.

She had a deadline.

Everything suddenly connected.

The birthday dinner.

The recordings.

The custody petition.

The cameras.

She needed to create a reason before the trust deadline arrived.

She needed Lily removed from us before the money became untouchable.

I called Jason.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

“Did you know the trust transfers in two days?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

“No,” he said quickly.

“Not exactly.””

“Jason.””

“I knew there was a date. I didn’t know it was that soon.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn’t you check?””

“Because I trusted my family.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it was the same mistake that brought us here.

Trusting people who had already shown who they were.

“I’m coming over,” he said.

When Jason arrived, he looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had spent days watching his entire family fall apart.

Rachel explained everything.

Jason listened.

Then he asked the question none of us wanted to answer.

“What happens if Diane refuses to approve the transfer?””

Rachel folded her hands.

“Then we challenge her.””

“How long?””

“Months.””

Jason’s face tightened.

“And during that time?””

“She can delay access to the funds.””

I looked at Lily.

“But she can’t take custody.””

“No,” Rachel said.

“Then why is she still fighting?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because this was never only about the money.””

I frowned.

“What else?””

“Control.””

That word stayed with me.

Because Diane had always needed control.

Control over Jason.

Control over our marriage.

Control over Lily.

The money was just another weapon.

That evening, Jason went back to his parents’ house.

Not to argue.

To find answers.

I didn’t want him to go alone.

But he insisted.

“I need to face this.””

Three hours later, he called.

His voice was different.

“Sarah.””

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

My heart tightened.

“Where?””

“In my mother’s office.””

“What?””

“She kept everything.””

I heard papers moving.

“Jason, what did you find?””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then:

“The original trust documents.””

“But Rachel already has copies.””

“Not these.””

His voice lowered.

“These were hidden.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because there’s a handwritten note.””

“From who?””

“My grandfather.””

I waited.

Jason continued.

“It says Diane was never supposed to control the trust.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“She was only supposed to deliver documents.””

“Then why did she have authority?””

Jason breathed out.

“Because she changed the paperwork.””

My hands went cold.

“She forged it?””

“I think so.””

A long silence followed.

Then Jason said:

“Sarah, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“She knew my grandfather was changing it back.””

“When?””

“The week before he died.””

I felt a chill.

“Then why didn’t she?””

Jason’s answer came quietly.

“Because she didn’t let him.””

The line went silent.

I barely breathed.

“What do you mean?””

Before Jason could answer, I heard a sound.

A door closing.

Then Jason whispered:

“She’s here.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

A pause.

May you like

Then his voice changed.

“Mom.””
