Chapter 11: The Night Lily Was Born

The courthouse hallway felt like it had shrunk around me.

People walked past.

Lawyers carried folders.

Phones rang.

Conversations happened.

But all I could hear was one sentence.

*Ask your husband what happened before Lily was born.*

I turned toward Jason.

“Tell me.””

He looked away.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Not another secret.””

He closed his eyes.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

“That’s what you always say.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because I was tired of being hurt alone.

Rachel approached.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

She read the message.

Then looked at Jason.

“What is she talking about?””

Jason was silent.

That silence was enough.

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“Jason.””

He sighed.

“There was an accident.””

“What kind of accident?”” I asked.

“Before Lily was born.””

My stomach tightened.

“Explain.””

Jason sat down.

“I was driving home from work.””

“And?””

“It was raining.””

He looked at his hands.

“I got into a crash.””

I frowned.

“Why don’t I know about this?””

“Because nobody was seriously injured.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He swallowed.

“My father was in the car.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Robert?””

“Yes.””

“What does this have to do with Lily?””

Jason looked at me.

“Everything.””

The hallway suddenly felt too quiet.

“My grandfather changed the trust after the accident.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed my father and mother were becoming reckless.””

I waited.

Jason continued.

“He added a condition.””

“What condition?””

“That if I ever had a child, I would have full control over the trust unless someone proved I was incapable.””

I stared at him.

“So Diane lied.””

“Yes.””

“She made it sound like she had power.””

“She only had power if I failed.””

My anger shifted.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

Because I realized something.

Diane wasn’t just attacking me.

She was attacking Jason too.

“She needed you to look weak.””

Jason nodded.

“She needed me to agree with her.””

“Why?””

“Because if I supported her claims, it would make her argument stronger.””

I looked at him.

“You were part of her plan.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was different from before.

Before, Jason hid things.

Now, he was finally facing them.

Rachel checked her phone.

“We need to go back inside soon.””

But Jason stopped her.

“There’s more.””

We both looked at him.

“My father wasn’t just in the accident.””

“What happened?””

Jason’s face tightened.

“He was drunk.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He begged me not to tell anyone.””

“And you agreed?””

“I was twenty-seven.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

The hallway blurred slightly.

Because suddenly I understood Robert.

The calm voice.

The confidence.

The belief that he could control everyone.

He had been doing it for years.

“He threatened you,” I said.

Jason nodded.

“He said if I told the truth, he would make sure my grandfather removed me from the family.””

“And Diane?””

“She helped cover it up.””

My hands went cold.

They had built their entire family around secrets.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

“Everyone back inside.””

We returned.

Diane was already standing.

Smiling.

The judge looked toward Rachel.

“Do you have additional evidence?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

She placed a new folder down.

“This concerns the credibility of Mrs. Whitmore’s claims.””

Diane’s smile faded.

The judge opened the folder.

Inside were records.

Messages.

Financial documents.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Diane meeting with a private investigator.

The date was visible.

Three weeks before the birthday dinner.

The judge looked up.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

Diane’s face tightened.

Rachel spoke calmly.

“This investigation began before any alleged concerns about the child existed.””

The judge stared at Diane.

“Why were you investigating the child’s mother before filing this petition?””

For the first time, Diane had no answer.

Then Robert suddenly stood.

“Because she was never the problem.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at Jason.

Then at me.

May you like

And said:

“The problem was the money.””
