Chapter 15: The Truth Before Her First Breath
I didn’t sleep.
I couldn’t.
The sentence kept replaying.
Someone tried to take Lily away before she was even born.
Before I held her.
Before I heard her cry.
Before I knew her tiny fingers could wrap around mine.
Someone had already been planning her future.
And it wasn’t for her.
It was for themselves.
The next morning, Jason came to my house carrying a folder.
He looked like he hadn’t slept either.
“What did you find?””
He sat across from me.
“I went to the hospital.””
“Why?””
“The records were archived.””
My heart pounded.
“And?””
He opened the folder.
Inside were medical documents.
Legal forms.
Notes.
“What am I looking at?””
Jason pointed to a page.
“Two weeks before Lily was born, my mother contacted the hospital.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“For what?””
“She requested information about the delivery.””
“That’s not strange.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“What she requested was strange.””
I read the page.
Then I froze.
“She asked about newborn guardianship?””
Jason nodded.
“She was asking what would happen if the parents were unable to care for the child.””
My hands started shaking.
“She was planning this before Lily existed.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“And you knew?””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I swear, Sarah, I didn’t know.””
I believed him.
Because his face looked destroyed.
Rachel arrived an hour later.
When she saw the documents, she became serious.
“This is significant.””
“Why?””
“Because it proves intent.””
“Intent?””
“Yes.””
She placed the documents down.
“Diane didn’t suddenly become concerned after the birthday incident.””
Rachel looked at me.
“She was preparing for control from the beginning.””
The word control followed us everywhere.
Because that was what Diane wanted.
Not love.
Not family.
Control.
Jason found the final recording that afternoon.
We listened together.
Diane’s voice came through.
But this time, she sounded different.
Older.
Tired.
Less confident.
“I know you think I’m cruel.””
A man answered.
My grandfather.
“You are cruel.””
My heart stopped.
Diane continued.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No. You did what benefited you.””
“I was protecting my son.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
A silence.
Then Diane said:
“If Lily gets that money, we lose everything.””
My fingers tightened.
My grandfather responded:
“She is a child.””
“She is an obstacle.””
The room went silent.
Jason covered his mouth.
Because hearing his mother say it was different.
Hearing the truth directly.
Not rumors.
Not accusations.
The recording continued.
“You don’t understand,” Diane said.
“I understand perfectly.””
“She will destroy this family.””
“No.””
My grandfather’s voice became firm.
“You destroyed it yourself.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Jason whispered:
“My grandfather knew.””
“Yes,” Rachel said.
“He knew exactly who she was.””
I looked at Jason.
“What happened after this conversation?””
He looked down.
“That was the night my grandfather changed the trust.””
“And the night Diane found out.””
Jason nodded.
“And two days later, he died.””
The room became silent.
Not because we were shocked.
Because we were finally seeing the entire picture.
Diane hadn’t started this fight at Lily’s birthday.
She had started it years ago.
Before Lily had a name.
Before Lily had a face.
Before Lily took her first breath.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
Not Diane.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
“Sarah?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Claire Whitmore.””
I froze.
Whitmore.
Jason looked at me.
The woman continued.
“I was your husband’s grandfather’s attorney.””
My heart started racing.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I’ve been waiting until Lily was old enough.””
I looked at Jason.
“What do you mean?””
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Because your daughter’s trust has one final condition.””
My stomach tightened.
“What condition?””
The woman answered:
“Before Lily receives anything…”
A pause.
“…the person who tried to take it from her must be exposed publicly.””
I stopped breathing.
“And Sarah?””
“Yes?””
“I have the original evidence.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Where?””
Claire whispered:
“Somewhere Diane never thought to look.””
The line went silent.
May you like
Then she added one final sentence.
“Inside the birthday gift she gave Lily three years ago.””
