Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Camera

We left Diane’s house immediately.

Jason drove faster than I had ever seen him drive.

His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

“Who has access to our house?”” I asked.

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

“I changed the locks last month.””

“But someone still got in.””

The words hung between us.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been close enough to photograph my daughter.

And somehow, I hadn’t noticed.

That terrified me more than anything.

When we reached Emma’s house, I ran inside.

“Where’s Lily?””

Emma looked up from the couch.

“She’s asleep upstairs.””

I rushed up.

I needed to see her.

Needed to touch her.

Needed proof that she was safe.

Lily was curled under her blanket, hugging her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit Diane had thrown.

I sat beside her.

Her little fingers wrapped around mine.

And for a moment, the world became quiet.

Then Jason appeared in the doorway.

“We need to talk.””

I stood up.

“Not here.””

He nodded.

We went downstairs.

Emma watched us carefully.

“What happened?””

I showed her the message.

Her face changed.

“Someone was inside your house?””

“We don’t know.””

“Yes, we do,” Emma said.

We both looked at her.

She pointed at the photograph.

“Look.””

I zoomed in.

At first, I saw only Lily.

Then I noticed something in the corner.

A reflection.

A small mirror near the hallway.

And in the reflection…

A person.

Standing behind the camera.

My heart stopped.

“Who is that?””

Jason took the phone.

He zoomed in.

His face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He stared at the image.

“No, no, no.””

“Jason.””

He looked at me.

“It’s impossible.””

“Who is it?””

His voice became barely a whisper.

“My father.””

The room went silent.

Emma stepped back.

“Your father was in your house?””

Jason shook his head.

“He doesn’t have a key.””

“Apparently he does,” I said.

Jason covered his face.

“I don’t understand.””

But I did.

Pieces were finally connecting.

Diane wasn’t acting alone.

This wasn’t just about a controlling grandmother.

It was bigger.

They wanted something.

And they were willing to use my daughter to get it.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered on speaker.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Older.

Calm.

Too calm.

“Sarah.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Robert?””

Jason looked shocked.

His father had never called me directly.

“Where is my daughter?”” Robert asked.

My eyes narrowed.

“Your daughter?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then his voice hardened.

“You took something from her.””

I looked at Jason.

“What are you talking about?””

Robert sighed.

“You really have no idea, do you?””

“Explain.””

His tone changed.

Almost sympathetic.

“That’s what Diane was trying to prevent.””

“Prevent what?””

Silence.

Then:

“Your daughter was never the target.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Robert continued.

“The target was what belongs to her.””

I felt a chill.

“What belongs to Lily?””

Jason stepped closer.

“Dad, what are you doing?””

Robert ignored him.

“You should ask your husband why he never told you about the inheritance.””

My eyes moved to Jason.

He went completely still.

“Jason?””

He didn’t answer.

“Jason.””

His face collapsed.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

Another thing everyone had hidden from me.

Robert’s voice came through the phone one final time.

“Ask your husband what happened the night Lily was born.””

The call ended.

I stared at Jason.

“What inheritance?””

He looked away.

And that was when I realized…

The recordings, the cameras, the custody threats…

May you like

They weren’t the beginning.

They were just the cover story.
