Chapter 14: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

“Jason?””

I heard Diane’s voice through the phone.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

That frightened me more than anger.

Because anger was honest.

Diane’s calm was calculated.

“Jason, hang up.””

He didn’t.

Good.

For once, he didn’t obey her.

“What are you doing here?”” he asked.

Diane laughed softly.

“You always were dramatic.””

I could hear footsteps.

“You broke into my office.””

“I was looking for answers.””

“You were looking for reasons to hate me.””

Jason’s voice sharpened.

“No. I was looking for the truth.””

A pause.

Then Diane spoke.

“You sound just like your father.””

The words hit him.

“What does that mean?””

I heard a chair move.

“I mean you think you’re brave now.””

“Did you change the trust documents?””

Silence.

Long enough.

Too long.

“Who told you that?””

Jason’s breathing changed.

“You did.””

Diane laughed.

“I never said anything.””

“You didn’t have to.””

Another pause.

Then Diane’s voice became colder.

“You have no idea what your grandfather was like.””

“Don’t change the subject.””

“I’m not.””

The confidence in her voice was unsettling.

“Your grandfather made promises he couldn’t keep.””

“What promises?””

I heard papers move.

“He wanted to give everything to Lily.””

Jason didn’t answer.

“He wanted to cut us out.””

“So you changed it.””

Diane sighed.

“You make it sound so simple.””

“It was.””

“No.””

Her voice hardened.

“It was survival.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

Survival.

That was what people like Diane called selfishness when they wanted sympathy.

Jason asked:

“What happened the week before Grandpa died?””

Silence.

Then:

“He was confused.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“He wasn’t healthy.””

“Mom.””

Another silence.

Then Diane said:

“I helped him make decisions.””

My stomach turned.

“Helped?””

Jason’s voice was barely controlled.

“You manipulated him.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I know you.””

That sentence landed.

Because it was true.

Jason knew his mother.

Maybe he had spent years pretending he didn’t.

But he knew.

Diane became quiet.

Then she said something unexpected.

“I did everything because of you.””

Jason froze.

“What?””

“I protected you.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

I listened.

Waiting.

Diane continued.

“Your grandfather hated your father. He wanted to punish him by taking away his inheritance.””

“So?””

“So I made sure you still had a future.””

Jason’s voice broke.

“You stole my daughter’s future.””

“No.””

Diane sounded offended.

“I secured it.””

The call suddenly cut.

I stared at my phone.

“Jason?””

No answer.

I called back.

Nothing.

My heart started racing.

I grabbed my keys.

Then my phone rang.

Jason.

“Where are you?””

His breathing was heavy.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

“What happened?””

“I found another recording.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“My mother recorded the conversation with my grandfather.””

I sat down slowly.

“About the trust?””

“Yes.””

“Then we have proof.””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“We have more than proof.””

“What does that mean?””

A long pause.

Then:

“She admitted why she changed everything.””

“Why?””

Jason swallowed.

“Because she knew Lily was the only person who could expose her.””

I frowned.

“Expose her for what?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Sarah, my mother wasn’t just hiding the money.””

A chill moved through me.

“What else?””

“She was hiding what happened the night Lily was born.””

The room went silent.

Again.

Always another secret.

Always another locked door.

“Jason…”

“I found the hospital records.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What records?””

His voice shook.

“The reason Lily’s trust was created.””

I waited.

“Your daughter wasn’t supposed to receive the money because she was the first grandchild.””

A pause.

“She received it because my grandfather knew something was wrong.””

I whispered:

“What was wrong?””

Jason answered.

May you like

And the truth changed everything.

“He knew someone in the family had tried to take Lily away before she was even born.””
