Chapter 9: The Witness in the Shadows

The courtroom doors opened slowly.

Everyone turned.

For six months, I had wondered how many people knew the truth.

How many people saw what happened.

How many people stayed silent.

And now I was about to find out.

A woman entered.

Older.

Gray hair.

Nervous eyes.

She held a small purse tightly against her chest.

I didn’t recognize her.

But Sarah did.

The moment Sarah saw her, all the color left her face.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

But I heard it.

Laura noticed.

“Who is that?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

The woman walked toward the witness area.

The judge looked confused.

“Identify yourself.””

The woman swallowed.

“My name is Linda Carter.””

My heart stopped.

Carter.

My last name.

I looked at Laura.

She looked back at me.

“Michael?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know her.””

The woman looked at me sadly.

“Yes, you do.””

A chill ran through me.

She opened her purse.

And pulled out an old photograph.

She walked closer.

“This was taken twenty-seven years ago.””

The court officer handed the picture to the judge.

Then to Laura.

Laura looked at it.

Her face changed.

“What is this?””

The woman looked at me.

“My name is Linda Carter.””

She took a breath.

“And I’m your biological mother.””

The room disappeared.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the whispers.

Not the judge.

Not Reeves.

Nothing.

Because one sentence had shattered a part of my life I thought I understood.

“My mother died when I was six,” I said.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s what you were told.””

My hands went cold.

Laura stepped closer.

“Why are you here?””

Linda looked at Sarah.

“Because she contacted me.””

Sarah looked terrified.

“What?””

Linda’s voice shook.

“She called me three months ago.””

Nobody moved.

“She wanted information about Michael.””

I stared at Sarah.

“Why?””

Linda looked down.

“Because Sarah needed something.””

Laura’s expression hardened.

“What?””

Linda looked at me.

“Your adoption records.””

The courtroom became silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“Why would she need those?””

Linda’s eyes moved toward Sarah.

“Because Sarah found out something about your past.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

The woman opened her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a folder.

“My son…”

She looked at me.

“You weren’t just adopted.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She placed the folder on the table.

“You have an inheritance.””

Everyone froze.

Even Reeves.

Linda continued.

“A trust fund your biological father created before he died.””

My mind raced.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Linda looked at Sarah.

“She found out before the incident.””

Sarah looked away.

Laura picked up the folder.

“When?””

Linda answered quietly.

“Two weeks before Michael was arrested.””

My stomach dropped.

Two weeks.

Sarah knew.

She knew about the money.

She knew about my past.

She knew something I didn’t.

Laura opened the folder.

Her eyes moved across the documents.

Then she looked at me.

“Michael…”

“What?””

She hesitated.

“There’s more.””

The courtroom waited.

Laura slowly turned the paper around.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not mine.

Not Sarah’s.

Someone else’s.

A name I had never seen.

A name connected to my entire life.

And according to the document…

That person had been trying to contact me for years.

But Sarah had stopped them.

I looked at Sarah.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

The truth wasn’t just about the night I was arrested anymore.

It was about everything that happened before it.

And as Linda opened her mouth to reveal the final secret…

The courtroom doors opened again.

A man stood there.

Holding another file.

And he said:

“Michael Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He looked at me.

“I’m here because your father left you a message.””

May you like

A pause.

“He knew someone would try to take everything from you.””
