Chapter 10: The Message My Father Left Behind
Nobody in that courtroom knew what to do with the new information.
Not the jury.
Not the lawyers.
Not even the judge.
For six months, this case had been about one question:
Did Michael Carter hurt Sarah?
Now the question had changed.
Why had Sarah hidden so much about my past?
And what did my dead father know that I didn’t?
The man standing at the courtroom entrance stepped forward.
He looked to be in his late fifties, wearing a dark suit and carrying a worn leather briefcase.
Not a prosecutor.
Not a detective.
Someone else.
Someone who had been waiting.
The judge looked annoyed.
“Sir, identify yourself.””
The man nodded.
“My name is Thomas Reed. I’m an attorney representing the estate of Robert Carter.””
My heart stopped.
Robert Carter.
The name felt strange.
Like hearing a song from a childhood I couldn’t remember.
My biological father.
A man I had never met.
A man I was told died before he could know me.
Thomas walked toward the evidence table.
“I apologize for the interruption, Your Honor. But after recent developments, this information has become relevant.””
Reeves stood.
“Your Honor, this is completely outside the scope of this trial.””
The judge looked at him.
“Mr. Reeves, considering the circumstances, I believe we should hear this.””
Reeves sat.
But he looked frustrated.
Thomas placed the folder down.
“Mr. Carter, your father left a recorded message and legal documents that were to be delivered only if certain conditions were met.””
I stared at him.
“What conditions?””
Thomas looked at Sarah.
“That someone attempted to falsely accuse you of a serious crime.””
The room went silent.
Sarah’s expression changed.
Because she understood.
She knew exactly why that condition had been triggered.
Thomas opened the folder.
“Your father believed that someone connected to your family would eventually try to take advantage of your situation.””
Laura looked confused.
“Why would he believe that?””
Thomas glanced at me.
“Because he spent years investigating the circumstances surrounding Michael’s adoption.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My adoption?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father discovered that the official records surrounding your childhood were incomplete.””
Linda, the woman who claimed to be my biological mother, covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
She looked down.
“I was young. I made mistakes. People convinced me giving you up was the safest choice.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
“And my father?””
Thomas answered.
“He spent his entire life trying to find you.””
That hurt more than I expected.
Because suddenly, the man I had never known became someone who had been searching for me.
Someone who wanted me.
Someone who had been erased from my life.
Thomas opened another document.
“This is the first part of his message.””
He looked at me.
“Would you like me to read it?””
I nodded.
His voice changed as he read.
“Michael, if you are hearing this, then someone has tried to make you believe you are less than you are.””
The courtroom became completely still.
“People will judge you by what they see. They will look at your mistakes, your scars, your past, and decide they know your heart.””
I looked down.
The tattoos.
The accusations.
The judgment.
Every word landed.
“But remember this. A person’s worth is not measured by what others choose to believe.””
Thomas paused.
Then continued.
“I spent years searching for my son because I needed him to know one thing.””
His voice softened.
“You were never unwanted.””
I swallowed hard.
For years, I had wondered why I was abandoned.
Why nobody fought for me.
Why I had been left with strangers.
And now I was hearing the opposite.
Someone had fought.
Someone had tried.
Thomas folded the paper.
But he wasn’t finished.
“There is another part.””
Laura looked at him.
“Another part?””
Thomas nodded.
“This part concerns Sarah.””
The courtroom shifted.
Sarah’s face went pale.
Thomas pulled out another document.
“Your father discovered that Sarah had accessed confidential information regarding Michael’s inheritance.””
Reeves stood.
“Objection. How is this relevant?””
Thomas looked at the judge.
“Because the inheritance was the motive.””
Nobody spoke.
Sarah’s attorney immediately objected.
“This is speculation.””
Thomas calmly replied.
“No.””
He placed a document on the table.
“This is a bank record showing a transfer attempt made by Sarah Carter three days before Michael’s arrest.””
My stomach dropped.
Laura picked it up.
Her eyes widened.
“Sarah…”
Sarah said nothing.
Laura looked at me.
“She tried to access the trust.””
I stared across the courtroom.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Sarah’s eyes filled.
For a moment, I thought she might finally admit everything.
Instead, she whispered:
“Because you weren’t supposed to find out.””
The judge leaned forward.
“Mrs. Carter, explain.””
Sarah looked around.
Everyone was waiting.
And then she said something that changed the entire case.
“I wasn’t trying to take Michael’s money.””
May you like
A pause.
“I was trying to stop him from getting it.””
