Chapter 17: The Trial Behind the Trial

The next morning, the world knew my name for a different reason.

Not as the dangerous man with tattoos.

Not as the father accused of hurting his wife.

But as the man whose entire life had been built on a lie.

Reporters filled the courthouse steps.

Cameras followed every movement.

But inside the courtroom, none of that mattered.

Because the real battle was happening between the truth and everything that had been buried.

Ethan Carter sat quietly.

For the first time, he looked powerless.

The judge reviewed the new evidence.

The confession letter.

The adoption records.

The financial documents.

The testimony from Rebecca.

Everything pointed in one direction.

But Laura reminded me something before court began.

“Michael.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“This is not over.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because proving Ethan’s crimes doesn’t automatically erase Sarah’s.””

I looked toward Sarah.

She sat alone.

No confidence.

No anger.

Just silence.

I didn’t know what I felt about her anymore.

She had hurt me.

But she had also been used.

Both things were true.

When court resumed, the judge addressed Ethan.

“Mr. Carter, based on the evidence presented, additional charges may be considered.””

Ethan looked calm.

Too calm.

Then he smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“I always wondered when someone would finally challenge me.””

The judge frowned.

“This is not a game.””

“No.””

Ethan looked at me.

“It’s a lesson.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Laura leaned toward me.

“Don’t respond.””

But I couldn’t look away.

Ethan continued.

“You think truth wins because you found documents?””

Nobody moved.

“You think because people feel sorry for you, you understand what happened?””

The judge warned him.

“Mr. Carter.””

But Ethan continued.

“You have no idea what your father was involved in.””

The room went quiet.

Laura looked at Thomas.

Thomas looked concerned.

“What does he mean?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Ethan smiled.

“Ask your father.””

My blood ran cold.

“He’s dead.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But he left you secrets.””

The judge ordered him to stop.

But the damage was done.

After a short recess, Thomas approached me.

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your father’s company wasn’t just a business.””

I felt that familiar cold feeling again.

“What was it?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Your father was investigating illegal operations connected to several powerful people.””

I stared.

“And Ethan?””

Thomas nodded.

“He was trying to stop him.””

My mind raced.

“So Ethan killed him because of that?””

“Possibly.””

“Possibly?””

Thomas looked away.

“There are still missing pieces.””

Before I could ask more, my phone rang.

I froze.

Nobody had my number inside the courthouse.

The call came from an unknown number.

Laura looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

But something inside me told me I needed to.

I picked up.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

“Michael?””

I stood completely still.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it once before.

In the recording.

My father.

No.

Impossible.

“Who is this?””

The woman breathed shakily.

“My name is Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“Claire who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Claire Carter.””

The courtroom disappeared.

Another Carter.

Another secret.

Another person connected to the life I never knew.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“It’s not.””

“Who are you?””

The answer came softly.

“I’m your sister.””

I couldn’t speak.

A sister.

A person who had existed my entire life.

A person I never knew.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

Her voice lowered.

“Because the people who hid you…”

A pause.

“They know I found you.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Frozen.

Laura looked at me.

“Michael?””

I looked toward the courtroom doors.

May you like

Because suddenly I understood.

Ethan wasn’t the only secret my family had buried.
