Chapter 13: The Man Who Never Let Me Go

The courtroom doors opened.

Nobody spoke.

Not even the judge.

The entire room seemed frozen, waiting for the person who had been hidden from me my entire life.

Then he walked in.

An old man.

Gray hair.

Straight posture.

Cold eyes.

He didn’t look like someone entering a courtroom because he was afraid.

He looked like someone entering because he believed he still had control.

Thomas Reed stepped back.

“Ethan Carter.””

The name moved through the courtroom.

Linda looked away immediately.

Her hands trembled.

I stared at him.

My grandfather.

A stranger who somehow had fingerprints all over my entire existence.

The old man looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Almost proudly.

“So.””

His voice was deeper than I expected.

“This is what you became.””

I felt anger rise.

Not the kind Reeves had tried to convince everyone I had.

Something different.

Something colder.

“You know who I am?””

He tilted his head.

“Of course I know who you are.””

“Then why didn’t I know you existed?””

A silence followed.

Ethan looked toward Linda.

“Because some truths are better buried.””

Linda’s face tightened.

“You don’t get to say that.””

He looked at her.

“You were always weak.””

The words hit her like a slap.

My hands tightened.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

His eyes returned to me.

And something strange happened.

He smiled.

“You sound like your father.””

I froze.

“You knew him?””

“I raised him.””

The answer surprised me.

“You raised Robert?””

“Yes.””

“And you still did what you did?””

His expression didn’t change.

“Your father was emotional. He believed love was more important than power.””

I stared at him.

“And you don’t?””

“No.””

The honesty was disturbing.

“I believe power protects people.””

Nobody spoke.

Ethan walked closer.

The officers immediately moved.

But he didn’t seem bothered.

“You think I’m the villain because you have only heard one side.””

I laughed quietly.

“One side?””

I looked around the courtroom.

“My entire life was taken from me.””

His expression hardened.

“You were given a better life.””

“By stealing it?””

A flicker of emotion crossed his face.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“Your father would have destroyed everything.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“That’s not what happened.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You always were loyal to Robert.””

“Because he was right.””

The room shifted.

Ethan looked annoyed.

Then Reeves stood.

“Your Honor, given this witness’s involvement, I request he be questioned.””

The judge nodded.

“Proceed.””

Reeves approached Ethan.

“Mr. Carter, are you aware that you are connected to documents involving Michael Carter’s adoption?””

“Yes.””

“Are you aware those documents were altered?””

“Yes.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Reeves paused.

“You admit that?””

“Yes.””

The courtroom erupted.

The judge called for silence.

Reeves looked confused.

“Why?””

Ethan stared at me.

“Because I made a decision.””

“What decision?””

“To protect this family.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Family?””

My voice shook.

“You stole my family.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped forward as much as the cuffs allowed.

“I understand perfectly.””

For the first time, Ethan looked at me differently.

Not like a stranger.

Like a problem.

Reeves continued.

“Mr. Carter, did you know Sarah Carter before this trial?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Sarah’s face changed.

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked away.

Reeves continued.

“How long?””

“Several years.””

The courtroom became chaos.

Sarah’s attorney stood.

“Objection.””

The judge raised his hand.

“Overruled. Continue.””

Reeves looked at Sarah.

“Did you meet with Ethan Carter before Michael’s arrest?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Laura turned toward her.

“Sarah?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew him?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt different this time.

Because Sarah had been hiding pieces of my life I never even knew existed.

Reeves looked at Ethan.

“Did you ask Sarah to accuse Michael?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Reeves repeated.

“Did you?””

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked surprised.

Even me.

Then Ethan added:

“But I did tell her the truth.””

Reeves frowned.

“What truth?””

Ethan looked directly at me.

“That Michael Carter is not the man he thinks he is.””

The courtroom went silent.

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan reached into his coat.

The officers moved immediately.

But he slowly pulled out an old envelope.

“My son left you this.””

Thomas looked shocked.

“You had that?””

Ethan ignored him.

He handed it toward me.

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written on it.

In handwriting I had never seen.

But somehow…

It felt familiar.

“What is it?””

May you like

Ethan looked at me.

“The truth about why your father died.””
