Chapter 11: The Truth Sarah Buried

The sentence stayed in the air.

I wasn’t trying to take Michael’s money.

I was trying to stop him from getting it.

Everyone heard it.

But nobody understood it.

Including me.

Laura turned toward Sarah.

“Why?””

Sarah looked exhausted.

Like she had finally run out of lies.

“I found out what Robert Carter left behind.””

She looked at me.

“And I knew Michael couldn’t have it.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Why?””

Sarah laughed softly.

Not happily.

Almost sadly.

“Because I knew what would happen when you found out.””

Thomas frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Sarah looked at him.

“You don’t know everything.””

That caught everyone’s attention.

Even Linda looked confused.

Sarah wiped her eyes.

“I found the records years ago.””

“Records of what?”” Laura asked.

Sarah looked at me.

“Your father’s company.””

The room became quiet again.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Be careful.””

Sarah ignored him.

“Robert Carter wasn’t just wealthy.””

She looked at me.

“He was involved in something bigger.””

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah looked away.

“I found documents showing he had enemies.””

Laura crossed her arms.

“And your solution was to frame your husband?””

Sarah flinched.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“No, that wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I stared at her.

“Then what was supposed to happen?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“I was supposed to scare you.””

The words hurt.

Even though I already knew she had betrayed me.

“I wanted you to leave.””

My voice was quiet.

“Leave?””

She nodded.

“I thought if you were arrested, you would lose your obsession with finding out about your past.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“My obsession?””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“You were always looking for answers. Always asking questions. Always searching for people who weren’t there.””

My hands tightened.

“You mean my parents?””

Sarah looked down.

“Yes.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“So you destroyed my life because I wanted to know where I came from?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Her eyes filled.

“Of losing you.””

Nobody spoke.

The confession was complicated.

Ugly.

Human.

But it didn’t erase what she did.

Laura stepped closer.

“Sarah, fear does not explain planting evidence.””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Fear does not explain involving Jason.””

“I know.””

“Fear does not explain letting your daughter believe her father was dangerous.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I know.””

For the first time, she sounded genuinely broken.

But I couldn’t forgive her.

Not yet.

Because forgiveness wasn’t the same as understanding.

And I understood something now.

Sarah didn’t hate me.

She feared losing control.

The judge looked toward Thomas.

“Does this information affect the criminal charges?””

Thomas answered carefully.

“Yes.””

He opened another folder.

“Because the documents Robert Carter left behind include evidence of financial manipulation connected to Sarah’s actions.””

Sarah looked up.

“What?””

Thomas pulled out a report.

“Before Michael’s arrest, someone attempted to change the beneficiary information on the trust.””

Laura looked at me.

“Someone tried to remove you.””

My stomach turned.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at the document.

“The request was submitted under a legal authorization.””

The courtroom waited.

“And whose name was attached?””

Thomas looked directly at Sarah.

“Sarah Carter.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

The word came out weak.

“I never signed that.””

Thomas nodded.

“That’s the problem.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked toward the judge.

“The signature was forged.””

The room exploded.

Sarah stared at him.

“I didn’t do that.””

Thomas nodded.

“I believe you.””

That surprised everyone.

Even Sarah.

Thomas continued.

“Because the person who forged it wanted Sarah blamed.””

Laura frowned.

“Then who?””

Thomas reached into the folder.

And pulled out another photograph.

A man.

Standing beside Sarah.

My stomach tightened.

Because I recognized him.

Jason.

But it wasn’t just Jason.

There was someone else in the picture.

Someone older.

Someone who looked familiar.

Someone from my past.

Linda gasped.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Who is that?””

She covered her mouth.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“That’s…”

She couldn’t finish.

Thomas answered.

“That’s the man who helped arrange Michael’s adoption.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the photograph.

A man I had never met.

A man connected to every missing piece of my life.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“And he’s the reason your father left the message.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“Because Robert Carter believed he was still alive.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

Thomas turned the picture around.

The name written on the back was visible.

A name that meant nothing to me.

May you like

But everything to Linda.

“Your biological grandfather.””
