Chapter 19: The Truth About Emily

For a long time, I couldn’t move.

The photograph felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Not because of what it showed.

Because of what it suggested.

Emily.

My daughter.

The little girl who walked into a courtroom with a red marker and changed the way everyone saw me.

The little girl who believed in me when the entire world believed the worst.

Not Sarah’s daughter.

I looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

She looked down.

“I didn’t want to tell you like this.””

“Tell me what?””

She took a breath.

“Emily is your daughter.””

I frowned.

“Of course she is.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

The room felt colder.

“She’s your biological daughter.””

I stared.

“What?””

Claire stepped inside and closed the door.

“Michael, there’s something Sarah never told you.””

My heart started racing.

“About Emily?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the bedroom.

My daughter was asleep.

Completely unaware that adults had spent years hiding pieces of her life.

“What are you saying?””

Claire sat down.

“When Robert found out Ethan had been controlling your adoption records, he started investigating everything connected to your family.””

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“Including Sarah.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why Sarah?””

“Because Ethan introduced her into your life.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“Your relationship with Sarah wasn’t as natural as you thought.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Michael—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Sarah and I met in college.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

“Because Ethan knew where you were.””

The silence was unbearable.

“He watched you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at the photograph.

“Because he needed someone close to you.””

I felt sick.

“Sarah.””

Claire nodded.

“She wasn’t supposed to fall in love with you.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything I remembered.

Our first date.

Our wedding.

The moment Sarah told me she was pregnant.

Was any of it real?

“Emily…”

Claire’s expression softened.

“Emily is the reason Sarah changed.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Sarah started questioning Ethan after Emily was born.””

“Why?””

“Because she saw who you really were.””

I remembered Sarah in the hospital.

Holding Emily.

Smiling.

The moments before everything became complicated.

Claire continued.

“She realized Ethan had lied to her.””

“Then why did she still do this?””

Claire looked down.

“Because by then, Ethan had something against her.””

“What?””

“A secret.””

I stared.

“What secret?””

Claire hesitated.

Then answered:

“Emily’s birth.””

The room went silent.

“Explain.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Sarah couldn’t have children.””

My mind went blank.

“No.””

“She was told she couldn’t.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“She found out later that the records had been changed.””

I felt dizzy.

“Changed by who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Ethan.

“He manipulated her too.””

I looked toward Emily’s room.

The truth felt impossible.

“So Emily…”

Claire nodded.

“Emily is yours.””

“But Sarah?””

“She carried her.””

I sat down.

My entire body felt heavy.

The truth wasn’t what I expected.

Sarah wasn’t a stranger.

She wasn’t just the person who betrayed me.

She was someone who had also been trapped.

But that didn’t erase the pain.

It didn’t erase what she did.

A knock came at the door.

I froze.

Claire looked alarmed.

“Did anyone follow you?””

“No.””

The knock came again.

This time harder.

I moved toward the door.

“Who is it?””

A voice answered.

“Michael.””

Sarah.

I opened the door.

She stood there alone.

No attorney.

No anger.

Just tears.

“You know.””

I stared.

“How long have you known?””

She looked down.

“About Emily?””

I nodded.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Since she was born.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Ethan threatened me.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“But it’s true.””

“What did he threaten?””

Sarah’s voice broke.

“To take Emily away.””

Silence.

“He told me if I ever told you the truth, he would destroy both of us.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

She wiped her face.

“I was wrong.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Sarah said:

“There’s something else.””

I felt tired.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

“What now?””

She looked terrified.

“Ethan didn’t come to the courthouse because he wanted to defend himself.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

She whispered:

“He came because he knew Claire was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Sarah looked at me.

“The reason Ethan kept you alive.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

May you like

Her answer was barely audible.

“Because you are the only person who can destroy him.””
