Chapter 15: The Truth That Was Buried

The words didn’t make sense.

Never supposed to survive.

I stared at Thomas.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

Because everyone in that courtroom understood the same thing.

This had gone far beyond a custody fight.

Far beyond a false accusation.

Someone had planned something decades ago.

Something much darker.

The judge ordered everyone to remain while investigators were contacted.

Sarah sat frozen.

Her attorney whispered urgently to her.

But she wasn’t listening.

She was staring at me.

Like she was seeing me differently.

Like she was finally seeing the person she had almost destroyed.

I walked closer as much as my restraints allowed.

“Sarah.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“Did you know?””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

I searched her face.

“Did you know someone tried to hurt me?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then what were the records doing in your house?””

Her lips parted.

No answer.

That silence hurt.

Because even now, there were still secrets.

Laura approached her.

“Sarah, now is the time to tell the truth.””

Sarah looked down.

“I found them.””

“When?””

“A month before the arrest.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

She wiped her face.

“Because Ethan gave me access.””

I stared.

“Access?””

She nodded.

“He said he could help me understand Michael.””

I almost laughed.

“He was helping you destroy me.””

Sarah whispered:

“I know.””

Laura asked:

“What did Ethan tell you?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“He told me Michael’s father abandoned him.””

A pause.

“He told me Michael was unstable because of his childhood.””

My hands tightened.

That was it.

The story.

The same story everyone believed.

Sarah looked at me.

“He convinced me that you were dangerous.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

A silence passed.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I was wrong.””

Those three words were small.

But they mattered.

Not enough to erase everything.

Not enough to fix the damage.

But they mattered.

Before I could answer, the courtroom doors opened.

A detective entered carrying a box.

Everyone turned.

He approached the judge.

“Your Honor, we recovered the documents.””

The judge nodded.

“Explain.””

The detective placed the box down.

“Inside were adoption files, financial records, and communication between Ethan Carter and several individuals.””

Reeves stood.

“Individuals?””

The detective nodded.

“People connected to Michael Carter’s adoption.””

The room became tense.

“How many?””

“Four.””

The detective looked at me.

“And one of them is still alive.””

A chill ran through me.

“Who?””

The detective opened a folder.

“A woman named Rebecca Hayes.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Linda gasped.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You know her?””

Linda’s face went pale.

“She was there.””

“Where?””

“When they took Michael.””

The room went silent.

My heart pounded.

“Who was she?””

Linda looked at me.

“The woman who convinced me to sign the papers.””

The detective continued.

“Rebecca Hayes has been missing for twenty years.””

Thomas frowned.

“Missing?””

The detective nodded.

“Until today.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

The detective looked toward the courtroom entrance.

“She walked into the police station this morning.””

The judge leaned forward.

“Why?””

The detective hesitated.

Then answered:

“She said she wanted to confess.””

The room exploded.

Laura looked stunned.

“Confess to what?””

The detective looked at me.

“To what really happened the day Michael Carter disappeared.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

The day I disappeared.

A day I didn’t remember.

A day everyone else had rewritten for me.

The judge ordered Rebecca brought in.

Minutes later, the doors opened again.

A woman entered.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying decades of guilt.

She looked at Linda.

Then at Ethan.

Then at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

Nobody spoke.

She stepped closer.

“I should have told the truth a long time ago.””

The judge asked:

“Ms. Hayes, what truth?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Your mother did not give you away.””

Linda started crying.

Rebecca continued.

“She was forced.””

My entire body froze.

Then she said the sentence that shattered everything I believed about my childhood.

“Your grandfather took you because he wanted your father to obey him.””

Ethan’s face finally changed.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

Rebecca looked directly at him.

“And when Robert tried to get his son back…”

A pause.

“He made sure Robert never had the chance.””

The courtroom went silent.

I looked at Ethan.

My voice barely worked.

“What did you do to my father?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

May you like

Because Rebecca already had.

“He killed him.””
