Chapter 18: The Sister Who Knew My Name

I didn’t tell anyone about the phone call immediately.

Not Laura.

Not Thomas.

Not even Linda.

Because after everything I had learned, I understood one thing.

Secrets were dangerous.

But sometimes the truth was even more dangerous.

For years, I believed my life was simple.

A childhood.

An adoption.

A marriage.

A daughter.

Then one courtroom destroyed everything I knew.

My father had searched for me.

My grandfather had hidden me.

My wife had lied to me.

And now I had a sister.

A sister who was afraid.

When court resumed, I barely heard the arguments.

My mind was somewhere else.

Claire.

The name kept repeating.

My sister.

How?

Why?

Laura noticed.

“You’re distracted.””

I looked at her.

“I got a call.””

Her expression changed.

“From who?””

I hesitated.

“Someone connected to my family.””

She waited.

I continued.

“My sister.””

Laura stared.

“Michael…”

“I know.””

She sat down.

“Did she say anything else?””

“She said the people who hid me know she found me.””

Laura became serious.

“Did she mention Ethan?””

“No.””

“That doesn’t mean he’s not involved.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was watching me.

And somehow…

I knew.

He knew something.

After court ended for the day, I approached him.

The guards watched carefully.

“Do you know Claire?””

The moment I said her name, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You met her.””

It wasn’t a question.

I froze.

“You do know her.””

Ethan looked away.

“She should have stayed hidden.””

My heart pounded.

“Hidden from who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

For the first time, I used his name without calling him grandfather.

He noticed.

“You think you understand everything now.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand that everyone made decisions about my life except me.””

His jaw tightened.

“That was necessary.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That was convenient.””

A silence passed.

Then he whispered:

“She was supposed to protect you.””

“Who?””

“Claire.””

I stared.

“Protect me from what?””

Ethan looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

“From your father’s enemies.””

I frowned.

“My father’s enemies?””

He nodded.

“Robert believed he could expose them.””

“And you?””

“I believed he would get you killed.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you stole me.””

“I saved you.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You saved yourself.””

His expression hardened.

And I knew I had hit something real.

Because maybe Ethan didn’t believe he was evil.

Maybe that was the most terrifying part.

Maybe he believed everything he did was justified.

That night, I sat alone in my apartment.

Emily was asleep in the next room.

The red heart she drew on my cheek had finally faded.

But I kept the memory.

A reminder.

A reminder that before anyone knew my story…

She knew my heart.

Around midnight, there was a knock at the door.

I froze.

Nobody knew where I was staying.

I walked toward the entrance.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“Who is it?””

A voice answered.

“Michael.””

My heart stopped.

It was Claire.

I opened the door.

And there she stood.

A woman around my age.

Same dark eyes.

Same scar near the eyebrow.

A face that somehow felt familiar.

She looked at me.

And started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t move.

“Are you really my sister?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you find me sooner?””

Her face broke.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Ethan?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then who?””

She looked past me.

Toward Emily’s bedroom.

And whispered:

“Of the person who has been watching your family for years.””

I felt cold.

“What person?””

Claire reached into her bag.

And pulled out a photograph.

She handed it to me.

It showed Emily.

At school.

Taken from a distance.

My blood turned cold.

“When was this taken?””

“Three weeks ago.””

I looked at her.

“Who took it?””

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“The same person who tried to erase you.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“And Michael…”

I looked at her.

“That person isn’t your grandfather.””

She lowered her voice.

“It’s someone closer.””

I stared at the photograph.

Because written on the back were five words.

May you like

Words that made my entire body freeze.

*She was never Sarah’s daughter.*
