Chapter 9: The Memory I Was Forced to Forget
The basement was silent.
Too silent.
Everyone was looking at me.
But nobody looked at me the way they had before.
Not with anger.
Not with fear.
With uncertainty.
And that was worse.
I stared at the necklace lying on the floor.
My mother’s necklace.
The one I had searched for after her death.
The one I thought was gone forever.
Vanessa knew where it was.
She knew things about me that nobody should have known.
My hands started shaking.
“I didn’t kill anyone.””
The words came out like a question.
Emily immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, look at me.””
I did.
“You didn’t.””
Her certainty almost broke me.
“But I remember.””
Emily grabbed my hands.
“You remember what she wants you to remember.””
Vanessa laughed from behind the locked door.
“Still defending him?””
Her voice came through the speaker again.
“How sweet.””
I turned toward the door.
“Open it.””
“No.””
“Vanessa!””
“You spent years believing everyone else was lying to you.””
Her voice became softer.
“Maybe it’s time you finally believe yourself.””
The screens turned on again.
Another video.
This time, there was no younger version of me sitting calmly.
No documents.
No photographs.
It showed a dark room.
A basement.
My basement.
I was standing there.
But I looked different.
Exhausted.
Angry.
Broken.
A woman was on the floor.
I couldn’t see her face.
My younger self was shouting.
“You ruined everything.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Emily stepped closer to the screen.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She covered her mouth.
“That’s not what happened.””
The video continued.
My younger self picked up something from the table.
A heavy metal object.
Then the camera cut.
My breathing became uneven.
“No.””
Rachel stepped toward me.
“Daniel, listen.””
“I saw it.””
“You saw a piece of it.””
The screen suddenly went black.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“You always stop remembering right before the truth.””
I looked around.
“What did you do to me?””
No answer.
Then the basement door unlocked.
Slowly.
Nobody moved.
Until Emily grabbed my arm.
“Don’t go after her.””
I looked at her.
“She wants me to.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she knows you.””
I stepped through the door.
The hallway upstairs was empty.
Vanessa was gone.
But she had left something behind.
A trail.
Photographs scattered across the floor.
Every few steps, another one.
My childhood.
My father.
My mother.
My first apartment.
Emily.
Lily.
A map of my entire life.
At the end of the hallway was a small table.
On it sat a recorder.
I pressed play.
My own voice filled the room.
“If anyone finds this…”
I froze.
The recording was old.
My voice sounded tired.
Afraid.
“I need them to know I tried.””
Emily came beside me.
“What is that?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
The recording continued.
“Vanessa is not who she says she is.””
My heart stopped.
“But if something happens to me, it means I failed.””
The recorder clicked.
Then my younger voice whispered:
“I hurt someone.””
Emily looked at me.
I closed my eyes.
The sentence destroyed me.
Then the recording continued.
“But not the way she wants people to believe.””
I opened my eyes.
Everyone froze.
“What?””
My voice continued.
“She made me think I was protecting someone.””
A pause.
“She made me think I was saving a life.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Saving whose?””
The recording ended.
A new sound came from behind us.
A door opening.
Vanessa stood at the end of the hallway.
But this time she wasn’t smiling.
She looked angry.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
I stepped toward her.
“What happened?””
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“You’re remembering too much.””
“Tell me the truth.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her face hardened.
“Because the truth destroys everyone.””
I looked at Emily.
At Lily.
At Rachel.
Then back at Vanessa.
“Maybe it should.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she said the one thing that changed everything.
“The person you think you saved…”
She paused.
“Was the person who started this.””
Everyone went still.
She walked backward toward the exit.
“Come find me, Daniel.””
Her eyes locked on mine.
“And ask yourself one question.””
“What question?””
She smiled sadly.
May you like
“Who was really controlling who?””
Then she disappeared into the darkness.
