Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Disappearances
Marcus’s words hung in the air like smoke.
“She wasn’t the first woman to disappear from this family.””
For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.
My mind was still trying to catch up with the impossible reality in front of me.
Emily was alive.
My wife, the woman everyone told me had abandoned us, had been locked inside my own house.
And now Marcus was telling me there were others.
I stepped closer.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus looked toward the front door again.
“She’s going to kill me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
We both knew.
Vanessa.
I grabbed his shirt.
“Start talking.””
Marcus’s face twisted with fear.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
“Didn’t know what would go this far?””
He looked at Emily.
Then at Lily.
“I thought she just wanted money.””
The words made my grip tighten.
Emily slowly pushed herself against the wall.
Her voice was weak.
“Daniel… don’t listen to him unless he tells you everything.””
I looked back at her.
“What happened?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She found out.””
“Found out what?””
She looked at Lily.
And that was when I understood.
Whatever this was, it involved our daughter.
Emily took a shaky breath.
“Vanessa didn’t meet me by accident.””
The room became silent.
“She came into our lives because of you.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Emily nodded slowly.
“Before she became your wife, she spent months studying our family.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“That’s impossible.””
Emily looked at the walls around us.
“Is it?””
She pointed weakly toward the shelves.
“Daniel, look at this room.””
I turned.
At first, I saw only boxes.
Old furniture.
Dust.
Then I noticed something strange.
A small stack of folders hidden behind a broken cabinet.
I walked over and pulled them out.
The first folder had my name on it.
My hands went cold.
Inside were photographs.
Me leaving work.
Me picking Lily up from daycare.
Emily and I at a restaurant.
Private moments.
Moments nobody should have been watching.
“What is this?””
Marcus looked down.
“Her files.””
“Her files?””
I opened another folder.
A woman’s name was written across the top.
Rachel Morgan.
I had never heard the name before.
Until I turned the page.
There was a photograph.
A woman smiling outside a house.
And underneath it was a handwritten note.
*Last seen three years ago.*
I looked at Marcus.
“Who is Rachel?””
He didn’t answer.
Emily did.
“She was Vanessa’s sister.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Her sister disappeared?””
Emily nodded.
“Vanessa told everyone Rachel ran away.””
“Did she?””
Emily looked away.
“No.””
The silence after that answer was terrifying.
Lily was still holding her teddy bear.
She looked between us.
“Daddy?””
I forced myself to look at her.
“Go with Mommy for a minute, okay?””
Emily reached out.
Lily ran to her.
Watching them hug nearly broke me.
For two years, I had believed Emily left us.
For two years, I had watched Lily ask when her mother was coming home.
And the entire time…
She had been trapped only a few rooms away.
I turned back to Marcus.
“How long did you know?””
His face changed.
A mixture of shame and fear.
“About Emily?””
I stepped forward.
“How long?””
“A year.””
The anger that hit me was immediate.
“You knew?””
“I tried to help.””
“You tried to help?””
My voice echoed through the room.
“You sat at my dinner table. You watched my daughter cry for her mother. You knew where she was.””
Marcus lowered his head.
“I was scared.””
“You were comfortable.””
He flinched.
Because it was true.
I walked past him toward the hallway.
“We’re calling the police.””
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked down at his hand.
Slowly, he let go.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
His eyes moved toward the dark hallway.
“She has proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That you’re the one who hurt Emily.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She planned this.””
My heart started pounding.
“What are you saying?””
“She knew one day someone would find Emily. She needed someone to take the blame.””
I looked around the room.
The locked door.
The hidden files.
The chair.
Everything suddenly felt different.
Vanessa hadn’t just hidden Emily.
She had prepared for someone to discover her.
A sound came from upstairs.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
Emily’s face went pale.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“She keeps backup plans.””
The ringing continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then stopped.
A second later, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Vanessa.
“Daniel.””
My entire body stiffened.
“Where are you?””
She laughed softly.
“You still think you’re the hero in this story.””
I looked at Emily.
At Lily.
At the hidden room.
“What did you do?””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“I saved you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“You don’t remember what happened the night Emily disappeared, do you?””
I stopped breathing.
Because there was one thing Vanessa knew that nobody else did.
The one night of my life I couldn’t remember.
The night Emily vanished.
And then Vanessa said:
May you like
“Ask your wife what you did after midnight.””
The call ended.
