Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

The front door opened slowly.

Not with a dramatic crash.

Not with the sound of someone forcing their way inside.

Just a quiet creak.

The kind of sound that made the entire mansion feel like it was holding its breath.

I stepped in front of Lily and Emily.

“Stay behind me.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Nobody answered.

The darkness swallowed the hallway.

Then a figure appeared.

A woman.

She stood there soaked from the rain, one hand gripping the edge of the doorway.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Because I knew that face.

I knew those eyes.

I knew the scar above her eyebrow.

“Rachel?””

The woman froze.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“Daniel.””

Marcus stumbled backward.

“No…”

Emily looked between us.

“You know her?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because my brain was trapped eight years in the past.

Rachel Morgan.

Vanessa’s sister.

The woman everyone said disappeared.

The woman whose picture I had just held in my hands.

The woman who was standing in my house.

Alive.

Rachel stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“She’s coming back.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at Emily.

Then at Lily.

“Vanessa.””

The name carried a warning.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Fear.

“She knows I’m here.””

Marcus moved toward her.

“How did you get away?””

Rachel looked at him.

And the pain in her face told me everything.

“I didn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Rain tapped against the windows.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at me.

“It means she let me go.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because she needed me to deliver a message.””

I stepped forward.

“What message?””

Rachel reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My hands felt numb as I took it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Five words.

*Ask Daniel about the basement.*

I looked up.

“What basement?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily whispered:

“Our old house.””

My eyes moved to her.

“What?””

Emily looked terrified.

“The house before this one.””

I stared at her.

“We never had a basement.””

She shook her head.

“We did.””

The words hit me harder than they should have.

Because suddenly, I remembered.

Not clearly.

Not completely.

But enough.

A staircase.

A locked door.

A smell of gasoline.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“What is happening?””

Rachel walked closer.

“Vanessa doesn’t destroy people randomly.””

I looked at her.

“She chooses them.””

“Why?””

“Because she wants something.””

“What?””

Rachel’s eyes moved toward Lily.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“She wanted your family.””

The room went silent.

“She wanted your name. Your money. Your life.””

Emily held Lily tighter.

“But why us?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because you were the only person who ever made her feel powerless.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Rachel gave a sad smile.

“You really don’t remember.””

A sharp pain moved through my head.

Images.

Fragments.

A young Vanessa.

Standing outside a house.

Watching.

Waiting.

I closed my eyes.

“I met her before.””

Nobody moved.

Emily looked at me.

“You did.””

I opened my eyes.

“When?””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“Before we got married.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Rachel nodded.

“She didn’t become obsessed with you after Emily.””

“She was obsessed before.””

I looked at the three women in the room.

Everything I believed about my life was falling apart.

Then my phone buzzed.

A video message.

From Vanessa.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a room.

A basement.

My old basement.

My breath stopped.

The camera moved slowly across the room.

A chair.

A table.

Photographs covering the walls.

Pictures of me.

Emily.

Lily.

Rachel.

Then Vanessa appeared.

Smiling.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“I know you’re confused.””

She walked closer to the camera.

“But you always were.””

She touched one of the photographs.

“You forget the parts that hurt you.””

I felt my hands shake.

“Tonight, you’re going to remember everything.””

She smiled.

“Because the truth isn’t that I ruined your family.””

A pause.

“The truth is…”

The video glitched.

Then her face returned.

“You helped me start.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Then Rachel whispered:

“She’s taking you back to where it began.””
