Chapter 8: The Truth I Buried

Nobody breathed.

Vanessa stood in the doorway like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

Not scared.

Not nervous.

Confident.

Like she had already won.

My eyes locked on Marcus.

“You brought her here?””

He looked away.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Everyone says that.””

She stepped into the basement.

“People love pretending they had no choices.””

Emily moved in front of Lily.

Vanessa noticed.

And laughed softly.

“Still protecting her?””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“You’re sick.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Maybe.””

Then she looked at me.

“But Daniel knows the truth.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Her smile faded slightly.

“Still denying it?””

I looked at the screens.

The video.

The documents.

The memories I couldn’t reach.

“You drugged me.””

Vanessa laughed.

“No.””

She walked closer.

“You drugged yourself.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

She picked up the old folder.

“You were drowning.””

She opened it.

“You hated who you became after your father died.””

I froze.

Nobody mentioned my father.

Not in years.

“You blamed yourself.””

She continued.

“You started drinking. You pushed people away.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Stop.””

“But I saw potential.””

Her voice became almost gentle.

“You didn’t need a wife.””

She smiled.

“You needed someone to tell you who you were.””

I stared at her.

“You manipulated me.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Cold.

Honest.

“I did.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“She always thought love was enough.””

Then at Rachel.

“She thought truth mattered.””

Then back at me.

“But people don’t want truth.””

She stepped closer.

“They want someone to blame.””

I felt anger rising.

“You destroyed my family.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I revealed it.””

She pointed at the screens.

“Everything you forgot was something you chose to forget.””

I looked at Emily.

Then Lily.

Then the video.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa smiled.

Finally.

The question she had been waiting for.

“You found out I was investigating you.””

My face changed.

“What?””

“You realized I knew about your past.””

“My past?””

She nodded.

“You weren’t the innocent man everyone believed.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

But I couldn’t look away.

Vanessa continued.

“You had a secret before you met me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She pressed a button on her phone.

Another video appeared.

This one was older.

Much older.

A younger version of me.

Standing outside a hospital.

I watched myself speak to someone.

A woman.

I couldn’t see her face.

Then I heard my own voice.

“I can’t tell Emily.””

My blood ran cold.

The video ended.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You forgot because forgetting was easier.””

“What happened?””

She smiled.

“That’s the question, isn’t it?””

I moved toward her.

“Tell me.””

For the first time, her confidence cracked.

Just slightly.

“You don’t get answers for free.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

And my stomach dropped.

“You want to protect your daughter?””

I stepped between them.

“Don’t look at her.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Then remember.””

She tossed a small object onto the floor.

A necklace.

I recognized it instantly.

My mother’s necklace.

The one I thought had been lost years ago.

My hands trembled.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You gave it to me.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She leaned closer.

“The night you thought you killed someone.””

The room went completely silent.

Emily gasped.

Rachel covered her mouth.

And I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

Because suddenly, I remembered one thing.

One horrible thing.

A body.

A basement.

And my own hands covered in blood.

Vanessa whispered:

“Now you remember.””

The basement door locked behind her.

May you like

And for the first time in eight years…

I was afraid of myself.
