Chapter 4: The Night I Couldn’t Remember
I stood there holding the phone long after Vanessa disconnected.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
But everyone was looking at me.
Not with anger.
Not yet.
With questions.
Emily’s expression changed slowly.
Like she was afraid of the answer.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“What happened that night?””
She lowered her eyes.
And that scared me more than anything Vanessa had said.
“Tell me.””
Emily sat down slowly.
Lily was beside her, holding her hand.
For a moment, Emily looked like the strongest person in the room.
Then she looked like someone carrying a memory too painful to touch.
“The night I disappeared…”
She swallowed.
“You came home drunk.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“No.””
Emily looked at me.
“You did.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
The room became silent.
“I remember everything.””
I looked away.
Trying to search my own memories.
There was a gap.
A dark space.
A night I had always blamed on stress.
A night everyone told me I had forgotten because I was overwhelmed.
Emily continued.
“You were angry.””
“Angry about what?””
She hesitated.
“Money.””
I frowned.
“Money?””
“You found out someone had been accessing our accounts.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
Emily continued.
“You thought it was me.””
My heart sank.
“But why would I think that?””
“Because Vanessa showed you evidence.””
The name felt poisonous.
“She showed you fake messages. Fake transfers. Everything.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
“It didn’t to me either.””
Emily’s voice cracked.
“Until I found out she had been manipulating both of us.””
A memory flashed.
A hallway.
A voice.
Vanessa crying.
Emily shouting.
My own hands shaking.
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Emily looked at me.
“You remember.””
I closed my eyes.
A piece of that night returned.
Not everything.
Just fragments.
A broken picture frame.
Emily saying, “Daniel, please listen to me.””
Vanessa standing behind her.
Smiling.
I opened my eyes.
“What happened after that?””
Emily looked toward the locked room.
“She came after me.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She attacked you?””
Emily nodded.
“She told me nobody would believe me.””
Lily suddenly whispered:
“She said that to me too.””
Everyone turned.
My daughter looked down at her teddy bear.
“She said little girls who lie get taken away.””
My heart broke.
I walked over and hugged her.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words felt too small.
Too late.
Then Marcus spoke.
“There’s something else.””
I looked up.
He was staring at the floor.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then pulled something from his pocket.
A small envelope.
“I found this in Vanessa’s car.””
I took it.
Inside was a photograph.
My photograph.
But not from my wedding.
Not from my family.
From years before.
I turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And one sentence.
*The first replacement failed. Find another.*
My blood turned cold.
“What does this mean?””
Marcus’s face went pale.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
He pointed at the photo.
“That’s not Vanessa.””
I looked closer.
The woman standing beside me in the picture wasn’t my wife.
It was someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I had forgotten.
A woman from my past.
A woman who vanished eight years ago.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Vanessa has been doing this longer than anyone knows.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The mansion fell into darkness.
Lily screamed.
Then, from somewhere upstairs…
a woman’s voice called my name.
“Daniel…”
Everyone froze.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa.
It was another voice.
A voice from my past.
A voice I thought I would never hear again.
May you like
“Daniel, don’t let her find me.””
And then the front door slowly opened.
