Chapter 6: The Basement of Lies

The old house had been abandoned for years.

At least, that was what I thought.

But when we arrived, the lights were already on.

Waiting for us.

The drive there felt endless.

Emily sat in the back seat with Lily.

Rachel sat beside me.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew we were driving toward answers none of us wanted.

When we reached the house, I stopped the car.

The place looked exactly the same.

The cracked stone steps.

The dead garden.

The broken mailbox.

But there was one difference.

The basement window was glowing.

Someone was inside.

I stepped out.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t go in alone.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

“Because that’s what she wants.””

I looked at the house.

“What does she want?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“You to remember.””

We entered through the front door.

The smell hit me immediately.

Dust.

Wood.

Old memories.

Emily held Lily’s hand.

“Stay close.””

We walked toward the basement door.

It was locked.

Again.

A pattern.

Always locked doors.

Always secrets behind them.

I looked at the handle.

Then I noticed something carved into the wood.

A sentence.

My blood went cold.

*You promised you would forget.*

Emily covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

I touched the words.

And suddenly—

A memory.

A real one.

Not a fragment.

Not a dream.

Eight years earlier.

I was standing in this basement.

Vanessa was there.

But she wasn’t my wife.

She was just a stranger.

A woman crying.

A woman pretending to need help.

I remembered her voice.

“Daniel, please. You’re the only one who can save me.””

I remembered believing her.

I remembered bringing her inside.

I remembered Emily finding out.

I stepped backward.

“No…”

Emily looked at me.

“You remember something.””

I nodded slowly.

“I knew her.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I told you.””

The basement door suddenly unlocked.

Nobody touched it.

The handle turned by itself.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“I’m here.””

We opened the door.

Inside was a room filled with boxes.

But not old boxes.

New ones.

Organized.

Labeled.

A lifetime of evidence.

I pulled one open.

Photos.

Documents.

Letters.

Every victim.

Every person Vanessa had manipulated.

Then I found a folder with my name.

Inside was a contract.

A marriage contract.

Not mine and Vanessa’s.

An agreement.

Signed years before.

My name was at the bottom.

But I had never seen it.

I looked at Rachel.

“What is this?””

Her face lost all color.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

She pointed.

“The signature.””

I looked down.

And my blood froze.

Because it was mine.

But the date was impossible.

The contract had been signed one year before I ever met Vanessa.

Then Emily found another paper.

Her hands started shaking.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

She held a photograph.

A photograph of me.

Standing beside Vanessa.

In this basement.

The date on the back was from nine years ago.

Before Emily disappeared.

Before Lily was born.

Before my life with Vanessa ever began.

Rachel whispered the words none of us wanted to hear.

“Daniel…”

She looked at me.

“You didn’t meet Vanessa.””

A pause.

“She found you.””

Then the basement lights flickered.

A speaker hidden somewhere in the ceiling crackled.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Congratulations, Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

“You finally remembered the beginning.””

A second later, she added:

“But you still haven’t remembered the worst part.””

The speaker went silent.

Then one final sentence played.

The sentence that made Emily drop the photograph from her hand.

“You weren’t the victim.””

May you like

The room went completely still.

“You were my first experiment.””
