Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Mask

The words echoed through the basement.

“You were my first experiment.””

Nobody moved.

Not even the person breathing through the speaker.

For a moment, I convinced myself I had misunderstood.

That was easier.

Because the alternative was impossible.

I looked at Emily.

Her face had gone pale.

“Daniel…”

I stepped away from the speaker.

“What does she mean?””

Emily didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“She means Vanessa didn’t choose you because you were successful.””

Her voice was quiet.

“She chose you because you were broken.””

The sentence hit harder than I expected.

I turned toward her.

“Broken?””

Rachel looked around the basement.

“At this time in your life, you were grieving.””

I frowned.

“I wasn’t.””

Emily looked at me.

“Yes, you were.””

The room became silent.

I felt something inside my chest tighten.

Eight years ago.

Before Lily.

Before Vanessa.

Before everything fell apart.

There was a year of my life I barely remembered.

A year everyone told me I had survived.

But nobody ever explained.

Rachel walked toward a box in the corner.

“She studied you.””

She pulled out a folder.

“Your habits. Your fears. Your weaknesses.””

She threw it onto the table.

I opened it.

My name was on every page.

But this wasn’t a police file.

It was worse.

It was a psychological profile.

*Subject: Daniel Carter.*

*Emotional state: vulnerable.*

*Primary weakness: guilt.*

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Vanessa’s voice suddenly came through the speaker again.

“You want the truth, Daniel?””

Everyone froze.

“You were never random.””

The lights flickered.

“You were a test.””

I looked around.

“Show yourself.””

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

“Still pretending you’re in control.””

The sound made my stomach turn.

“You came to me when you needed saving.””

I closed my eyes.

And another memory returned.

A rainy night.

A bar.

A woman sitting alone.

Vanessa.

She was crying.

She told me her life was falling apart.

She told me nobody believed her.

And I believed her.

Because I knew that feeling.

Or at least I thought I did.

“I helped you,” I whispered.

“Yes.””

Her voice became colder.

“You did.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What happened after that?””

Rachel lowered her head.

“You became obsessed with protecting her.””

Emily nodded.

“She convinced you everyone was against her.””

I felt sick.

Because I remembered.

The arguments.

The accusations.

The people I pushed away.

My friends.

My family.

Even Emily.

Vanessa hadn’t just entered my life.

She had slowly removed everyone else from it.

Then Emily stepped forward.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She took a deep breath.

“The night I disappeared…”

Her voice cracked.

“You didn’t attack me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I lied.””

The basement went silent.

“You lied?””

Emily nodded.

“Because Vanessa threatened Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“She told me if I told you the truth, she would hurt our daughter.””

Lily held onto my hand tighter.

“She used you against me.””

Emily wiped her eyes.

“She made me believe the only way to protect Lily was to disappear.””

I stared at her.

“All these years…”

“I watched you suffer.””

Her voice broke.

“I wanted to come back.””

I looked away.

The pain was too much.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There’s another reason Vanessa picked you.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked ashamed.

“She needed someone with your reputation.””

“My reputation?””

Marcus nodded.

“Everyone trusted you.””

I didn’t understand.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa wasn’t building a family.””

He swallowed.

“She was building a story.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“What story?””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“The story where she was the victim.””

The basement speaker clicked.

Vanessa spoke again.

“And now the final chapter begins.””

Suddenly, the lights turned off.

A second later, every screen in the basement turned on.

There were dozens.

Videos.

Photographs.

Recordings.

My life displayed across the walls.

Then one video started playing.

It showed me.

Sitting in this exact basement.

Eight years earlier.

I watched myself look exhausted.

Broken.

Vanessa sat across from me.

But there was something different.

I wasn’t afraid of her.

I was angry.

My past self slammed a folder onto the table.

“You lied to me.””

The younger me pointed at Vanessa.

“You ruined everything.””

My breath caught.

Because I had no memory of this conversation.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“You’re going to forget this.””

My younger self laughed bitterly.

“You think you can control me?””

Vanessa smiled.

Then she placed a small bottle on the table.

And the video cut.

Nobody spoke.

Rachel whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I stared at the frozen screen.

“What did she do to me?””

Then the basement door slammed shut.

A voice came from behind us.

Not through the speaker.

Not through a recording.

A real voice.

“She didn’t do anything.””

We turned.

Marcus stood near the door.

But he wasn’t alone.

Vanessa was behind him.

Holding a phone.

May you like

And smiling.

“Daniel did it himself.””
