Chapter 2: The Door at the End of the Hall

Nobody moved.

The mansion suddenly felt much larger than it had five minutes earlier.

The expensive paintings on the walls.

The polished floors.

The glowing chandelier above us.

Everything that had once represented comfort now felt like a beautiful disguise.

I held the brass key tightly.

Vanessa recovered first.

“Daniel, stop.””

Her voice was shaking.

Not from anger.

From fear.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus stepped away from the wine cabinet and rubbed his shoulder.

“Bro, you’re seriously going to believe a kid over your wife?””

I didn’t even look at him.

“My daughter had a key to a locked room.””

Marcus glanced at Vanessa.

That small movement told me everything.

They were communicating without words.

And they had been doing it for a long time.

I walked toward the hallway.

Vanessa followed.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She forced a laugh.

“This is insane. You’re letting a child manipulate you.””

I turned around.

“She knew there was someone behind that door.””

“No, she doesn’t.””

“Then why are you scared?””

Her face tightened.

For the first time since I married her, Vanessa had no perfect answer.

I walked farther down the hallway.

Every step echoed.

Behind me, Lily whispered:

“Daddy, be careful.””

I turned around.

She was still standing near the dining room table.

Small.

Shaking.

But somehow braver than everyone else in the house.

“I’m here,” I said.

Then I reached the door.

The storage room door was old, hidden behind a row of decorative shelves.

I had lived in that mansion for three years.

I had walked past it hundreds of times.

Vanessa always said it was full of broken furniture and old boxes.

A useless room.

I inserted the key.

It fit.

Behind me, Vanessa gasped.

The lock turned with a heavy click.

I pushed the door open.

The smell hit me first.

Cold air.

Dust.

And something else.

Something that didn’t belong.

A faint smell of medicine.

“Mommy?””

Lily’s voice came from behind me.

I stepped inside.

The room was dark.

Boxes covered the walls.

Old furniture sat under white sheets.

Then I saw the chair.

And the rope beside it.

My blood ran cold.

“Daniel…”

Vanessa’s voice was behind me.

I turned.

She was standing at the doorway.

Crying now.

Real tears.

But I didn’t know if they were from guilt.

Or panic.

“Where is my wife?””

She said nothing.

“Where is Emily?””

The name hung in the air.

My first wife.

Lily’s mother.

The woman Vanessa had replaced two years after Emily disappeared.

Everyone believed Emily had left.

Everyone believed she had abandoned us.

Even me.

Until that moment.

A small sound came from the corner.

A cough.

My entire body froze.

I moved toward the sound and pushed aside a stack of boxes.

Behind them was a narrow space.

A hidden section of the room.

And inside—

A woman was sitting against the wall.

Her face was thinner.

Her hair was messy.

But I knew her instantly.

“Emily?””

Her eyes opened.

For a moment, she looked like she didn’t believe I was real.

Then her lips trembled.

“Daniel…”

My knees almost gave out.

Behind me, Lily screamed.

“Mommy!””

She ran forward.

I caught her before she reached the room.

Not because I didn’t want her to see her mother.

Because I didn’t want her to see what Vanessa had done.

Emily looked at Lily and started crying.

“My baby…”

Lily reached toward her.

“I told Daddy.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I knew you would.””

That sentence destroyed me.

Because it meant Emily had been waiting.

Waiting for someone to believe her.

I turned slowly.

Vanessa was gone.

The hallway behind me was empty.

“Where did she go?””

No one answered.

Then Marcus appeared at the end of the hallway.

But he wasn’t angry anymore.

He looked terrified.

“She knows,” he whispered.

I stepped toward him.

“What does she know?””

Marcus looked toward the front door.

“She knows you found her.””

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Then the sound of a car engine starting.

Vanessa was running.

But before I could chase after her, Marcus said something that stopped me.

Something I would never forget.

“She didn’t lock Emily in there because she hated her.””

I stared at him.

“Then why?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because Emily found out what Vanessa did before she married you.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What did she find out?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Emily.

May you like

And his voice dropped to a whisper.

“She found out Vanessa wasn’t the first woman to disappear from this family.””
