Chapter 9: The Family Secret

I stared at the photograph until the words on my screen blurred.

My mother.

Sitting across from Vanessa.

The night before my wedding.

The two people I trusted most.

Together.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

His face changed immediately.

Jonathan looked over his shoulder.

“When was this taken?””

I checked the message.

“Last night.””

My mother saw the photo.

And she stopped pretending.

“Claire…”

I stepped back.

“What did you talk about?””

She looked terrified.

“Nothing like this.””

“What does that mean?””

My voice was louder than I intended.

Guests nearby turned.

I didn’t care.

“Did you know she was planning something?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew she was upset.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked down.

And that was my answer.

Daniel moved closer to me.

“Claire.””

But I needed the truth.

“Mom, what did she tell you?””

My mother whispered:

“She said you were going to abandon the family.””

I almost laughed.

“Me?””

“She said after the wedding you would forget everyone.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed her?””

My mother cried.

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

That hurt.

More than I expected.

Because even after everything Vanessa had done, my mother still questioned me first.

Jonathan stepped in.

“Mrs. Parker, did Vanessa ask you to do anything?””

My mother hesitated.

Then nodded.

“What?””

“She asked me to convince Claire not to press charges.””

Silence.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Vanessa didn’t just attack people.

She recruited people.

She found their weaknesses.

She used love as a weapon.

“She told me she made a mistake,” my mother said.

I looked at her.

“She told you it was an accident?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“The video shows otherwise.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

My mother covered her face.

“Because she’s my daughter.””

The sentence landed heavily.

I looked away.

“And I’m your daughter too.””

She started crying harder.

“I know.””

But did she?

For years, Vanessa was the daughter everyone protected.

And I was the daughter everyone expected to understand.

My phone buzzed again.

Same unknown number.

Another message.

*Ask your mother what Vanessa gave her.*

I looked at my mother.

“What did she give you?””

Her face went pale.

“What?””

“Vanessa. What did she give you?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Mrs. Parker.””

She looked at the ground.

Then whispered:

“Money.””

Everything stopped.

“How much?””

She shook her head.

“Not for me.””

“Then what?””

“She said she needed help paying a debt.””

I stared.

“And you took it?””

“I was going to return it.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

I felt exhausted.

Not angry.

Just exhausted.

“Mom, do you understand what she did?””

“She said she needed protection.””

“No.””

I looked toward the building where Vanessa disappeared.

“She needed a shield.””

Then Jonathan’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Claire…”

“What?””

“The police are on their way.””

I nodded.

I expected fear.

I expected panic.

But instead, I felt calm.

Because everything Vanessa built was collapsing.

Then Jonathan added:

“They’re not here for Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

He looked at the phone.

“They received a report that you destroyed your own wedding dress for insurance money.””

I stared.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

Vanessa’s final move wasn’t just to attack me.

It was to become me.

May you like

And she was about to learn one thing.

Truth doesn’t need a performance.
