Chapter 7: The Man Who Escaped Her
Nobody spoke after Marcus arrived.
Not even Vanessa.
And that alone told me everything.
For years, she always had an answer.
A joke.
A dramatic reaction.
A way to turn the attention back toward herself.
But now she was silent.
Marcus walked toward Jonathan and handed him a small envelope.
“What’s that?”” Vanessa asked.
Her voice sounded different.
Smaller.
Marcus looked at her.
“Something you thought you destroyed.””
Jonathan opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails.
Contracts.
Photos.
And a small flash drive.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Where did you get those?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“You gave them to me.””
The crowd murmured.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Marcus turned toward everyone.
“Vanessa has always been good at making people believe she’s the victim.””
He looked at me.
“I know because I was one of those people.””
My father stepped forward.
“Marcus, what happened between you two?””
Marcus took a breath.
“She tried to take control of my company before we got married.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Marcus didn’t even look at her.
“She convinced me that marriage meant trust. She asked me to sign documents giving her financial authority.””
I stared at Vanessa.
The pattern was identical.
“She did the same thing to me,” I whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
Daniel looked at him.
“How?””
Marcus glanced at Jonathan.
“Because I found the same fake documents in Claire’s company records.””
The garden became chaotic.
Guests whispered.
Phones appeared.
People started recording.
Vanessa noticed.
And her panic turned into anger.
“You’re all believing him?””
She pointed at Marcus.
“He’s bitter because I left him.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“No.””
He pulled out his phone.
“You left because I found out what you were doing.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus pressed play.
A recording began.
Vanessa’s voice.
Clear.
“I don’t care if people hate me later. By then, I’ll already have what I want.””
A wave of shock moved through the crowd.
Then her voice continued.
“People are easy. They believe whoever looks hurt first.””
My mother sat down.
My father looked devastated.
I watched Vanessa listening to her own words.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You recorded me?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I protected myself.””
That sentence hit me.
Because that was exactly what I had finally learned to do.
Protect myself.
Vanessa looked around.
She wasn’t seeing family anymore.
She was seeing witnesses.
She stepped closer to me.
“Claire.””
I didn’t move.
“Don’t.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re enjoying this.””
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
“No, Vanessa.””
“Then why do you look so happy?””
“Because for once, nobody is asking me to forgive you.””
Her expression hardened.
“You think you’re better than me now?””
“No.””
I looked at the crowd.
“I think I finally stopped letting you make me feel smaller.””
For a moment, something almost human crossed her face.
Regret.
Then it disappeared.
Vanessa turned toward Jonathan.
“What happens now?””
He answered calmly.
“Now we report the evidence.””
Her face went pale.
“You wouldn’t.””
I stared at her.
“You destroyed a $60,000 gown.””
She laughed bitterly.
“That’s what this is about?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“It’s about every lie you told after.””
The police had not arrived yet.
But everyone knew what was coming.
Vanessa knew too.
She suddenly looked at my mother.
“Mom?””
My mother didn’t move.
“Mom, say something.””
My mother looked at her daughter.
The daughter she had defended for decades.
And then she looked at me.
The daughter she had asked to stay quiet for decades.
“I should have listened to Claire.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
That hurt her more than anything else.
Because she could handle strangers turning against her.
But she couldn’t handle losing the person who always protected her.
She turned away.
Then her phone rang.
She answered quickly.
“What?””
Her face changed.
“What do you mean the account is frozen?””
Everyone heard.
Vanessa looked around.
Then she whispered:
“No. That’s impossible.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“What account?””
I didn’t know.
May you like
But Vanessa did.
And judging by her expression, someone had just taken away the last thing she thought she controlled.
