Chapter 4: The Lie She Prepared
The email spread faster than I could stop it.
Within twenty minutes, my phone became impossible to control.
Messages.
Calls.
Notifications.
People asking questions.
People assuming answers.
Vanessa had planned everything perfectly.
She knew exactly what people would believe.
A beautiful bride.
A family scandal.
A financial accusation.
It was the kind of story people shared before knowing the truth.
Daniel sat beside me while Jonathan worked through every detail.
“Do not respond publicly,” Jonathan warned.
“But everyone thinks I stole from my own company.””
“And that’s exactly why we stay calm.””
I looked at the ruined dress hanging in the corner.
A few hours earlier, I thought the worst thing Vanessa could do was destroy silk.
I was wrong.
The dress was just the opening move.
Then someone knocked.
My father walked in.
His expression was devastated.
“Claire.””
I stood.
“Dad.””
He looked at the phone in his hand.
“Is this true?””
The question hurt.
Not because he asked.
Because he hesitated before believing me.
“No.””
He looked relieved.
“I knew it.””
But his relief disappeared quickly.
“Then why would Vanessa do this?””
I almost laughed.
“Because she’s been doing it my entire life.””
My father looked down.
He didn’t argue.
That scared me more.
Because maybe he was finally seeing it.
Jonathan placed several papers on the table.
“These prove the fraud accusations are fake.””
My father picked them up.
“How?””
“Because Vanessa created invoices using documents Claire never approved.””
He pointed at the signatures.
“These were copied.””
My father stared.
“From where?””
I answered quietly.
“My old wedding planning documents.””
Everyone looked at me.
“She stole my signature.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She planned this for months.””
I nodded.
“She did.””
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
Everyone stared.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice sounded calm.
Almost cheerful.
“Claire.””
I said nothing.
“Are you enjoying your wedding day?””
I looked at the destroyed dress.
“You did this.””
She laughed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Vanessa.””
“What? Did the dress magically fall apart?””
Jonathan motioned for me to continue.
I turned on the recorder.
“You know there are cameras in that room, right?””
Silence.
A tiny silence.
But enough.
Then Vanessa recovered.
“You installed cameras in a bridal room?””
“To protect myself.””
She laughed again.
“You always think everyone is against you.””
“No,” I said.
“I think you are.””
Her voice hardened.
“Be careful, Claire.””
“Is that a threat?””
“It’s advice.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was listening carefully.
Vanessa continued.
“You’re going to lose everything today.””
I smiled slightly.
“You already said that.””
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
“You don’t even know what I have.””
The call ended.
Everyone in the room stared at me.
Jonathan immediately saved the recording.
“She just admitted intent.””
Daniel squeezed my hand.
“She’s getting desperate.””
But I knew Vanessa.
Desperate people made mistakes.
And Vanessa had just made one.
I spent the next hour going through every file we had collected.
Bank records.
Messages.
Invoices.
Then I found something I had missed.
A folder hidden inside the company records.
Created three months ago.
The title was simple.
*Transfer Agreement.*
I opened it.
My face went pale.
Because inside was a document with my name.
My signature.
And a clause saying I had transferred ownership of my company.
To Vanessa.
I looked at Jonathan.
“This isn’t real.””
He read quickly.
Then his expression changed.
“Claire…”
“What?””
He pointed at the bottom.
“This document was filed yesterday.””
My stomach dropped.
Yesterday.
The day before my wedding.
Vanessa hadn’t just prepared a rumor.
She had prepared a takeover.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Can she do that?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“She thought she could.””
“Thought?””
He nodded.
“Because there’s one thing she doesn’t know.””
“What?””
Jonathan pulled out his phone.
“The original ownership documents.””
He opened a file.
And there it was.
My real signature.
My real agreement.
My real company records.
Then he showed me the final page.
A name appeared as the emergency witness.
A person Vanessa never expected.
My eyes widened.
“Wait…”
Jonathan looked at me.
“You know this person?””
I stared at the signature.
May you like
Because the witness was someone from Vanessa’s past.
Someone who knew every secret she had.
