Chapter 14: The Truth About Us

For the first time in months, Vanessa wasn’t trying to manipulate the room.

She looked tired.

Almost human.

“I want everyone to hear this,” she said.

Jonathan watched carefully.

“Go ahead.””

Vanessa looked at my father.

“Tell her.””

Everyone turned.

My father went pale.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You hid it long enough.””

I looked at my father.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father whispered:

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

My father sat down.

And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.

“Twenty-five years ago…”

He stopped.

My mother grabbed his hand.

But he pulled away.

“I made a mistake.””

The room became silent.

“When you and Vanessa were children, I discovered something.””

I waited.

“Vanessa was not supposed to be part of the inheritance.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“Because the trust was created for biological descendants.””

The words felt strange.

Cold.

“What are you saying?””

My father couldn’t look at me.

Vanessa answered.

“She isn’t your sister.””

Everything stopped.

I stared.

“What?””

My mother started crying.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Tell her.””

My mother covered her face.

I looked between them.

“Tell me.””

My father finally spoke.

“When Vanessa was born, we adopted her.””

I couldn’t breathe.

That was the secret.

Not betrayal.

Not money.

Something bigger.

Vanessa wasn’t my biological sister.

But she was my sister.

At least, she had been.

“You lied to me my whole life.””

My father nodded.

“We were afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would treat her differently.””

I looked at Vanessa.

And suddenly, everything became complicated.

She had spent years believing she was less.

But instead of building her own place, she tried to destroy mine.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“They always loved you differently.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not true.””

“Yes, it is.””

Her voice rose.

“You were the real daughter.””

I stepped closer.

“You were my sister.””

She looked at me.

“That wasn’t enough.””

And maybe that was the saddest part.

Because somewhere deep inside, I believed her.

She had spent her entire life feeling like she had something to prove.

But pain didn’t excuse cruelty.

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry you felt that way.””

Her expression hardened.

“But?””

“But you used that pain to hurt everyone.””

She looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the investigator entered.

“Ms. Parker.””

Vanessa stood.

This time, she didn’t fight.

She didn’t scream.

She just looked at me.

“I wish you hated me.””

I was surprised.

“Why?””

“Because then I could tell myself I was right.””

I didn’t answer.

She walked away.

And for the first time, I didn’t feel like I had defeated my sister.

I felt like I had lost her years ago.

That night, I returned home.

The wedding decorations were gone.

The dress was gone.

The chaos was finally quiet.

Daniel sat beside me.

“Are you okay?””

I looked outside.

“I don’t know.””

He smiled.

“That’s still honest.””

I laughed softly.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

One final message.

*I found something before they arrested me. Something about your wedding.*

I opened the attachment.

A photograph appeared.

My heart stopped.

Because it showed the wedding dress.

Before Vanessa touched it.

May you like

And behind the dress was something I had never seen.

A hidden envelope.
