Chapter 13: The Inheritance War

My uncle’s words stayed in my mind all night.

Vanessa was trying to save herself.

Not destroy me.

Save herself.

But from what?

The next morning, Jonathan arrived with documents that finally explained the inheritance.

And the truth was bigger than I expected.

“My grandfather left a family trust,” Jonathan explained.

I looked confused.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

The trust belonged to the Parker family.

The company.

The properties.

The investments.

Everything.

But there was one condition.

The inheritance would only transfer fully when both children reached a certain age.

My father and uncle.

And if either one attempted to remove the other unfairly, the trust would be frozen.

“So why does Vanessa matter?””

Jonathan placed a document down.

“Because your father changed his will.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He planned to give your share directly to you.””

My heart skipped.

“And Vanessa?””

“She believed she was entitled to half.””

I shook my head.

“She wasn’t.””

“No.””

Jonathan looked serious.

“But Vanessa believed she was.””

That was the key.

Vanessa wasn’t just jealous of my wedding.

She wasn’t just jealous of my success.

She believed I had stolen something from her.

Something she thought belonged to her.

I remembered all the years of comments.

“You always get everything.””

“You’re always the favorite.””

“You don’t even appreciate what you have.””

I thought they were insults.

Now I realized they were clues.

My uncle admitted everything when we confronted him.

He met us in his office.

He looked older than I remembered.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

He sighed.

“Vanessa came to me because she thought your father was cheating her.””

“With what?””

“The inheritance.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“So you helped her forge documents?””

My uncle looked ashamed.

“At first, I only gave advice.””

“And later?””

He looked down.

“Later, I realized she was willing to do anything.””

I felt sick.

“And you still helped?””

His silence answered.

I walked toward the window.

All my life, I had thought Vanessa was powerful because she was clever.

But now I understood.

She was powerful because people kept giving her chances.

That afternoon, the final investigation meeting happened.

Vanessa was present with her attorney.

She looked different.

Not broken.

Angry.

“You all think you’ve won,” she said.

Nobody responded.

She looked at me.

“Do you really think you’re better than me?””

I answered honestly.

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“I think you’re someone who spent so long fighting imaginary enemies that you became one.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what it’s like.””

“What?””

“To feel invisible.””

I almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

“You were never invisible, Vanessa.””

She laughed.

“You were always the one everyone wanted.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I was the one everyone trusted.””

Her expression changed.

Because she knew the difference.

Vanessa wanted attention.

I wanted peace.

The meeting continued.

Evidence after evidence.

The fake documents.

The recordings.

The financial trail.

Then Jonathan presented the final piece.

A video.

Not from my wedding.

From three weeks earlier.

Vanessa entering my office.

Opening my files.

Taking documents.

She looked shocked.

“I never stole anything.””

Jonathan paused the video.

“She didn’t steal money.””

He pressed play.

The footage showed Vanessa removing copies of my ownership records.

Preparing her takeover.

The attorney beside her whispered something.

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked defeated.

But then she smiled.

A small smile.

A dangerous one.

Everyone noticed.

“What?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“You still don’t know.””

“Know what?””

She leaned forward.

“The reason I needed your company.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

She smiled.

“Because it was never about the money.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Then she said:

“It was about what your father did twenty-five years ago.””
