Chapter 10: The Trap Inside the Lie

The police arrived ten minutes later.

And Vanessa was waiting.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She wasn’t surprised.

She wasn’t scared.

She stood near the entrance with her attorney, looking calm.

Too calm.

“She planned this,” Daniel whispered.

I nodded.

Of course she had.

Vanessa never reacted.

She performed.

An officer approached.

“Claire Parker?””

“Yes.””

“I need to ask you a few questions regarding the insurance complaint.””

“Of course.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She has been under extreme stress.””

I looked at her.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was still pretending.

The officer looked at her.

“And you are?””

“Her sister.””

I almost smiled.

Her favorite role.

The concerned sister.

Jonathan handed the officer a folder.

“Before any conclusions are made, I believe you need to review this.””

The officer opened it.

Inside were photos.

The security footage.

The financial records.

The forged documents.

The officer’s expression changed.

Vanessa noticed.

And for the first time, she looked nervous.

“What is that?””

The officer ignored her.

“How long have you had this?””

“Months,” Jonathan said.

The officer looked at me.

“Why didn’t you report it earlier?””

I answered honestly.

“Because I wanted to believe my sister would stop.””

The officer studied my face.

Then looked back at Vanessa.

“That is a common reason people delay reporting family-related crimes.””

Vanessa’s attorney stepped in.

“This is irrelevant. My client is the victim here.””

Jonathan smiled.

“Actually, that’s exactly what we need to discuss.””

He opened another document.

“The insurance complaint claims Claire intentionally damaged the dress.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain why the first person to mention insurance was Vanessa.””

Everyone went quiet.

Vanessa froze.

The officer looked at her.

“What does he mean?””

Jonathan handed over another recording.

A phone call.

Vanessa’s voice.

“If the dress is destroyed, Claire can claim insurance.””

The officer listened.

Then looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

I looked at Marcus.

He stood quietly in the background.

“From someone who knew she would eventually reveal herself.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

She looked back at me.

“You set this up.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You did.””

The officer continued reviewing evidence.

Then he reached the financial documents.

His expression became serious.

“Ms. Parker.””

Vanessa straightened.

“Yes?””

“Can you explain these transfers?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For once.

Vanessa had no story.

No excuse.

No victim speech.

Only silence.

The officer closed the folder.

“I think we need you to come with us for further questioning.””

My mother gasped.

“Wait.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Mom.””

That one word.

That was all it took.

My mother stepped forward.

And I thought she was going to protect her again.

But she didn’t.

She looked at Vanessa with tears in her eyes.

“I love you.””

Vanessa’s expression softened.

Then my mother continued.

“But I can’t keep saving you from what you choose to do.””

Vanessa looked stunned.

Because she finally lost the person she thought would always catch her.

The officer escorted her away.

But before she reached the door, Vanessa stopped.

She turned to me.

“You think you won?””

I said nothing.

She smiled slightly.

“You have no idea what’s coming.””

Then she walked out.

Everyone watched her leave.

And I should have felt victorious.

But I didn’t.

Because Vanessa’s final words stayed with me.

What was coming?

Later that night, after the guests left and the wedding decorations were being removed, I sat alone in the bridal room.

The damaged gown was still there.

A reminder of everything.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

One final message before they took her phone.

*You still don’t know who your real enemy is.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another notification appeared.

A new email.

The sender was someone I never expected.

May you like

The subject line was:

*Your father’s secret.*
