Chapter 12: The Message That Never Reached Me
The deleted message was from Marcus.
Three days before my wedding.
Three days before Vanessa destroyed my dress.
Three days before everything exploded.
I stared at the screen.
“Why didn’t I get this?””
Jonathan looked serious.
“Because someone accessed your email account.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who had access?””
Jonathan didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
I already knew.
Vanessa.
But when we checked the login records, something unexpected appeared.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was my mother.
I felt numb.
“No.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Claire.””
“She wouldn’t.””
Daniel gently touched my shoulder.
“Let’s hear the reason first.””
I called my mother.
She answered immediately.
“Claire.””
“Mom.””
She sounded nervous.
“What happened?””
I took a breath.
“Did you access my email?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Vanessa asked me to.””
The pain was immediate.
Even though I expected it.
Even though I knew.
It still hurt.
“She asked you to delete something?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
My mother started crying.
“A message from Marcus.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What did it say?””
My mother whispered:
“He warned you.””
I sat down.
“About what?””
“About Vanessa.””
Of course.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
My mother explained.
Vanessa had convinced her that Marcus was obsessed and trying to ruin the wedding.
She said the message was harassment.
My mother believed her.
So she deleted it.
“I thought I was protecting you,” my mother said.
I looked around the room.
Everyone always thought that.
Protecting me.
Protecting the family.
Protecting the image.
Nobody ever asked what I wanted.
“Mom.””
“Yes?””
“I need you to understand something.””
She waited.
“You weren’t protecting me.””
A long silence.
“You were protecting the version of Vanessa you wanted to believe in.””
My mother cried.
And this time, I didn’t immediately comfort her.
Because I was tired.
Not angry.
Tired.
That afternoon, Marcus came to meet us.
He brought the original message.
“I sent this because I knew she was escalating.””
I read it.
*Claire, I don’t know if you trust me, but Vanessa is preparing something. She has been collecting information about your company and your wedding. Please be careful.*
I looked up.
“You tried to warn me.””
Marcus nodded.
“I did.””
“Why didn’t you try again?””
He looked away.
“Because I knew what happened when people challenged Vanessa.””
I understood.
She didn’t just destroy things.
She destroyed people’s confidence.
That evening, Jonathan called with another update.
“The investigation is expanding.””
“Against Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
He hesitated.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“She wasn’t acting alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“The forged documents required someone with access to legal records.””
“Who?””
Jonathan looked at the file.
Then said:
“Someone inside your father’s company.””
I froze.
“My father’s company?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Jonathan handed me a name.
I read it.
And immediately recognized it.
My uncle.
My father’s younger brother.
The man who had hugged me at the wedding.
The man who told everyone Vanessa was “just misunderstood.””
I looked at Daniel.
“This can’t be real.””
Jonathan’s expression was grim.
“It gets worse.””
“How?””
“He wasn’t helping Vanessa for money.””
“Then why?””
Jonathan opened another document.
A transfer record.
A payment from my uncle.
To Vanessa.
The description was only one word.
*Inheritance.*
I stared.
“What inheritance?””
Jonathan looked at me.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Claire.””
I knew immediately.
My uncle.
“Don’t trust Jonathan.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You think you know the truth.””
His voice became colder.
“But you don’t.””
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Vanessa was never trying to destroy you.””
My heart stopped.
“She was trying to save herself.””
May you like
The call ended.
And for the first time, I wondered if the story I knew was still missing its biggest piece.
