Chapter 5: The Witness Vanessa Forgot
The name on the document belonged to someone I hadn’t spoken to in years.
Marcus Reed.
Vanessa’s former fiancé.
The man she told everyone had abandoned her.
The man everyone blamed.
The man I secretly suspected had escaped her.
“Why is Marcus the witness?”” Daniel asked.
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
Vanessa didn’t lose Marcus.
Marcus left.
And after he left, Vanessa spent months telling everyone he had betrayed her.
But what if that was another lie?
Jonathan picked up his phone.
“I’ll contact him.””
“No,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
“I want to do it.””
I didn’t know why.
Maybe because after years of letting Vanessa control every story, I wanted to hear the truth directly.
I found Marcus’s number through old records.
My finger hovered over the call button.
Then I pressed it.
He answered after three rings.
“Hello?””
“Marcus?””
Silence.
Then:
“Claire?””
His voice sounded surprised.
“Yes.””
A long pause.
“Is Vanessa okay?””
I almost smiled.
Even after everything, he asked about her.
“She’s fine.””
“That means something happened.””
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
“She attacked me,” I said.
Another silence.
Then Marcus sighed.
“She finally did it.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
“I knew she would eventually.””
I stood.
“Marcus, what does that mean?””
He spoke quietly.
“Vanessa doesn’t hate losing.””
“Then what does she hate?””
“Seeing someone else win.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did she forge documents before?””
“Yes.””
“Did she steal from people?””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Jonathan leaned closer.
“What happened with you?””
Marcus answered.
“She tried to take my company.””
I froze.
“Your company?””
“She thought marriage would give her access to everything I owned.””
“And when you refused?””
“She framed me.””
My stomach twisted.
The same pattern.
Different victim.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Marcus laughed sadly.
“Because nobody believed me.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because I understood it.
Vanessa had spent her entire life building a perfect image.
And every person who questioned her became the villain.
“Marcus,” I said, “I need your help.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I saw the news.””
Of course he had.
The dress.
The fraud accusation.
The perfect disaster.
“I kept copies,” he said.
“Copies of what?””
“Everything.””
My heart started pounding.
“What kind of everything?””
“Emails. Contracts. Recordings.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“Ask him about the recording.””
I did.
“Do you have recordings?””
Marcus was quiet.
Then he answered.
“One.””
“Of what?””
“Vanessa explaining exactly how she destroys people.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt a strange calm.
Not happiness.
Not revenge.
Something else.
Relief.
Because for the first time, I wasn’t fighting alone.
“Marcus,” I said, “can you send it?””
“Yes.””
“Why are you helping me?””
His answer came immediately.
“Because I spent years wishing someone had helped me.””
Ten minutes later, the file arrived.
I opened it.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
Clear.
Cold.
Confident.
“I don’t understand why people get so upset. If someone is weaker, they deserve to lose.””
Everyone froze.
Then her voice continued.
“Claire has always been easy. She thinks kindness protects her.””
I felt Daniel’s hand tighten around mine.
The recording continued.
“I’ll take everything from her eventually.””
Then Vanessa laughed.
And said the words that changed everything.
“The best part is, she’ll thank me for teaching her a lesson.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Jonathan slowly closed his laptop.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“She didn’t just damage your dress.””
He looked at the evidence surrounding us.
“She built an entire case against herself.””
Outside the room, guests were still waiting for the wedding.
Still wondering what happened.
Still believing Vanessa had ruined my day.
I looked at the destroyed gown.
Then I looked at the evidence.
And for the first time that morning, I smiled.
Because Vanessa thought she had taken away my perfect wedding.
She didn’t realize she had given me the one thing I needed most.
May you like
The truth.
And soon, everyone was going to hear it.
