Chapter 6: The Will That Changed Everything

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

I looked around the room.

Everyone was watching me.

Especially Vanessa.

Especially Daniel.

They knew.

They both knew exactly what Andrew was about to reveal.

“Mr. Cole,” I said quietly, “are you saying my father knew about this?””

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“How?””

“I can explain everything if you come to my office.””

I looked at the clock.

It was almost midnight.

“I need answers now.””

The lawyer sighed.

“I understand. But this involves legal documents and evidence.””

Evidence.

That word had followed me all night.

Videos.

Messages.

Photographs.

Now documents.

“How long have you known?””

A pause.

Then:

“Since before your father passed away.””

My eyes widened.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Was she involved?””

Another pause.

“I can’t discuss details over the phone.””

That was not a denial.

I ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Marcus…”

I turned toward him.

“Get out.””

His face changed.

“Listen—”

“Get out.””

Vanessa started crying.

“Please don’t do this.””

I looked at her.

“Do what?””

Her tears fell.

“Throw me away.””

I stared at her.

The irony was painful.

She was afraid of losing everything.

But she never thought about what she had already taken from us.

“My children spent months thinking they were unwanted in their own home.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then Lily.

“Sorry doesn’t erase that.””

Daniel stood slowly.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I laughed quietly.

“A mistake?””

He looked at me.

“You’re choosing them over us.””

I stared at him.

“They are my children.””

His expression hardened.

“And I’m your brother.””

I walked toward the door.

“Tonight I learned that family isn’t about blood.””

I opened it.

“It’s about who protects you when nobody is watching.””

Daniel left first.

Vanessa stayed.

For a moment, I saw the woman I married.

Not the person in the videos.

Not the person in the messages.

The woman I thought she was.

And that made it harder.

“Marcus…”

I looked at her.

“Where are you going to go?””

The question surprised me.

Because despite everything, part of me still cared.

She noticed.

Her eyes softened.

“I knew you still loved me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Her face fell.

“I love the person I thought you were.””

That hurt her.

But it was the truth.

Vanessa picked up her bag.

Before she left, she stopped.

“You should ask Andrew why your father was really investigating me.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked at me.

A strange expression crossed her face.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Then she walked out.

The front door closed.

For the first time that night, the house was quiet.

But the quiet didn’t feel peaceful.

It felt like the silence before another storm.

Ethan sat beside me.

“Dad?””

I looked at him.

“Yeah?””

“Do you believe Grandpa knew everything?””

I stared at the documents on the table.

“I don’t know.””

Lily leaned against my shoulder.

“But you’ll find out.””

I looked at my children.

And I realized something.

Vanessa had spent months trying to make me doubt them.

But they were the ones who showed me the truth.

The next morning, I drove to Andrew Cole’s law office.

The moment I walked inside, he stood up.

“Mr. Marcus.””

I shook his hand.

“Tell me everything.””

He opened a locked cabinet.

Inside was an old folder with my father’s handwriting on it.

My name was written across the front.

Andrew placed it on the desk.

“Your father left this for you.””

I opened the folder.

The first page contained a letter.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*“Marcus, if you are reading this, then the person I feared has finally entered your life.””*

I turned the page.

And below my father’s signature was a name.

May you like

A name I never expected to see.

*Vanessa’s mother.*
