Chapter 2: The Three Videos

The house felt colder after Ethan said those words.

Three videos.

That was all I could think about.

My wife had spent years telling me that family was built on trust. She had held my hand at our wedding and promised she would protect my children.

Now my son was standing in front of me, telling me she had been hiding things.

I looked at Ethan.

“Show me.””

Vanessa immediately stepped between us.

“No.””

I couldn’t believe what I heard.

“No?””

She took a breath.

“Marcus, this is becoming unfair. Ethan is angry because he thinks I’m replacing his mother.””

The words hit hard.

Because Vanessa knew exactly where to strike.

Ethan’s biological mother had passed away when he was young. Lily was my daughter from my previous marriage, and after Vanessa came into our lives, she always claimed she understood their pain.

But now I wondered if she had only been pretending.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

I raised my hand.

“Enough.””

Both of them stopped.

I looked at Ethan.

“Where are these videos?””

He unlocked his phone.

“I copied them from the home security system. I found them after Lily told me Mom had been acting strange.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“You’re going to believe a teenager over your wife?””

I looked at her.

“I’m going to believe evidence.””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Ethan pressed play.

The second video started from the camera in the kitchen.

The date was two weeks earlier.

Vanessa was standing alone near the counter.

She opened a cabinet and pulled out a small box.

Inside was the same necklace she claimed Lily destroyed.

I watched Vanessa place it inside a drawer.

Then she walked into the hallway and called someone.

The audio was faint, but clear enough.

“Don’t worry,” Vanessa said.

“I’ll handle it.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

The video ended.

Lily looked at me.

“That’s what I was trying to tell you.””

I turned to Vanessa.

“Who were you talking to?””

She looked away.

“It’s not what you think.””

“That answer usually means it’s exactly what I think.””

Ethan played the third video.

This one was from the backyard camera.

Vanessa was speaking to someone on the phone.

“I can’t keep pretending forever,” she said.

A pause.

Then she continued.

“Marcus trusts me. The kids trust him. Once Lily is blamed enough times, he’ll start seeing her differently.””

My blood ran cold.

Lily covered her mouth.

Ethan looked down.

He had heard it before.

But I hadn’t.

I turned slowly toward Vanessa.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“That’s not misunderstanding.””

She stepped closer.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

I moved back.

“Don’t.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to fix this family.””

I stared at her.

“By destroying my daughter’s reputation?””

She had no answer.

Then Ethan played the fourth video.

The final recording.

The camera was pointed toward the staircase.

The date was three months earlier.

Vanessa was standing there with Lily.

The audio was clearer.

“You need to learn something,” Vanessa said.

Lily’s voice trembled.

“What?””

“Your dad loves you. But people get tired of problems.””

My hands curled into fists.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears as she heard her own voice from months ago.

“I’m not a problem.””

Vanessa answered:

“Then stop making me look bad.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I can explain.””

I looked at her.

“Explain why you wanted my daughter to feel unwanted?””

She started crying.

“I never meant for it to go this far.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Then how far were you planning to take it?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You hate me.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No. I wanted to believe you.””

That sentence hurt more than any accusation.

Because Ethan wasn’t angry.

He was disappointed.

A knock suddenly came from the front door.

Everyone turned.

Nobody was expecting anyone.

I walked toward it slowly.

When I opened the door, a woman I had never seen before was standing outside.

She looked nervous.

“Are you Marcus?””

“Yes.””

She held out a small envelope.

“I think you need to see what’s inside.””

I looked at the envelope.

Then at her face.

“Who are you?””

She swallowed.

“I’m Vanessa’s sister.””

My stomach dropped.

May you like

She lowered her voice.

“And I know the real reason she targeted your children.””
