Chapter 16: The House That Held the Secret

The photograph of Lily made my entire body go cold.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

My daughter.

Standing outside the old family house.

The house that had been abandoned for fifteen years.

The house where my father died.

The house where my uncle was supposedly hiding.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is Lily?””

His face changed immediately.

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why is she in that picture?””

Daniel looked at the phone.

“She must have gone there.””

“Why would she go there?””

Neither of us answered.

Because we both knew.

Someone had called her.

Someone had manipulated her.

I called Lily.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

My heart started racing.

Then Ethan answered.

“Dad?””

“Where’s your sister?””

A pause.

“She’s not with you?””

I closed my eyes.

The fear on Ethan’s voice told me everything.

“No.””

“When did you last see her?””

“About an hour ago. She said she needed air.””

I felt anger and fear collide.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I thought she was outside!””

I forced myself to breathe.

Not now.

Not with Ethan.

Not with Lily missing.

“Send me your location.””

“Dad, what’s happening?””

“I’ll explain later.””

I hung up.

Daniel grabbed his keys.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Marcus—”

“You’ve lied enough.””

His expression fell.

“But I know that house better than anyone.””

I hated that he was right.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived.

The old family house looked exactly as I remembered.

Broken fence.

Overgrown yard.

Dark windows.

A place filled with memories nobody wanted to revisit.

I stepped out of the car.

Daniel followed.

The front door was already open.

That made my stomach drop.

“Lily!””

My voice echoed through the empty house.

No answer.

We entered.

Dust covered everything.

The furniture remained exactly where my father left it.

A frozen moment from another life.

Then I saw something on the floor.

Lily’s bracelet.

The one I gave her on her fifteenth birthday.

I picked it up.

My hands shook.

“She was here.””

Daniel looked around.

“Someone brought her here.””

We searched room by room.

Then we heard something upstairs.

A voice.

Lily.

I ran.

I reached the second floor and pushed open the door.

Lily was standing inside my father’s old study.

And she wasn’t alone.

An older man stood beside the desk.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

A face I had only seen in old family photographs.

My uncle.

Victor.

Lily looked at me.

“Dad.””

I rushed toward her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“I’m fine.””

I looked at Victor.

“What did you do?””

He smiled.

“Nothing.””

“Nothing?””

I stepped forward.

“You brought my daughter here.””

Victor looked amused.

“She came willingly.””

I turned to Lily.

She looked ashamed.

“I wanted answers.””

My heart broke.

“You should have come to me.””

“I tried.””

Her voice cracked.

“I tried so many times.””

That hurt.

Because she was right.

Everyone had been trying to tell me something.

And I kept believing the wrong people.

Victor walked toward the desk.

“You’re angry because you’re finally seeing the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a stack of documents.

“Your father built everything on lies.””

I laughed.

“You’re the one who disappeared.””

His expression hardened.

“Because your father betrayed me.””

“By protecting his family?””

“By stealing what was mine.””

There it was.

The same obsession.

Money.

Power.

Control.

I looked at Lily.

“Stay behind me.””

Victor smiled.

“You really are your father’s son.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you always choose emotion over logic.””

He picked up a document.

“Your father left everything to you because he thought you were better than me.””

I stared.

“He was right.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Then he said:

“Your father wasn’t the only one who knew about Lily.””

I froze.

“What?””

Victor looked at her.

“She was the reason your father changed the will.””

Lily looked confused.

“Me?””

Victor nodded.

“Your grandfather discovered the truth about your birth.””

I stepped forward.

“And?””

His eyes met mine.

“And he knew one day someone would try to use you against Marcus.””

The room became silent.

For the first time, Victor’s voice sounded less like a villain.

And more like someone explaining a plan.

“You think Vanessa’s family created this.””

He shook his head.

“They only continued it.””

I looked at the documents.

“Who started it?””

Victor smiled.

May you like

Then he said:

“Your father.””
