Chapter 5: The Inheritance Secret
Nobody spoke after Daniel’s confession.
My father.
The word alone brought back memories I hadn’t thought about in years.
He had passed away before I met Vanessa.
Before my second marriage.
Before all of this.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does my father have to do with Vanessa?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
“Answer me.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
“Your father left something behind.””
I frowned.
“Money?””
“No.””
“Property?””
He shook his head.
“Something more valuable.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Daniel, stop.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew about this?””
She looked terrified.
“Marcus, please.””
“No.””
I pointed at the table.
“Not anymore. No more secrets.””
Lily moved closer to me.
I could feel her hand holding my arm.
A small reminder that my children were still here.
Still watching.
Still hurting.
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father had a private investment account.””
I stared.
“My father wasn’t rich.””
“He wasn’t,” Daniel said.
“But he was smart.””
Rachel crossed her arms.
“And Vanessa knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“She found out before she married Marcus.””
My stomach twisted.
I looked at Vanessa.
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“She researched your family.””
The room went quiet.
“She knew about your father’s account. She knew about the inheritance clause.””
“What inheritance clause?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“The money was never supposed to go directly to you.””
I waited.
“It was supposed to be protected for your children.””
I looked at Lily and Ethan.
My heart sank.
“For them?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father wanted his grandchildren to have something secure.””
I slowly sat down.
All these years, I thought Vanessa wanted to build a family.
But maybe she saw my family as something she could take from.
Lily’s voice was quiet.
“So Mom wanted our money?””
Nobody answered.
But the silence did.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“That wasn’t the only reason.””
I looked at her.
“What other reason could there be?””
She took a deep breath.
“I loved you.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
Because there had been real moments.
The dinners.
The holidays.
The nights when she held my hand.
That was the cruelest part.
People don’t break your heart by being strangers.
They break it by becoming someone you trusted.
Ethan stood up.
“If you loved Dad, why did you make Lily feel like she didn’t belong?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was trying to make things easier.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No. You were trying to make us disappear.””
She started crying.
“I made mistakes.””
Rachel interrupted.
“Those weren’t mistakes.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pulled out another document.
“These were planned.””
She placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
It was a printed email.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was Daniel.
The subject line read:
*Next Step.*
I read the first sentence.
My hands went cold.
*“Marcus is emotionally attached to Lily. If we make him question her enough, he will eventually separate himself from her.””*
I couldn’t breathe.
They weren’t trying to steal money.
They were trying to destroy my relationship with my daughter.
I looked at Lily.
She was crying silently.
“Daddy…”
I immediately walked toward her.
“No.””
I held her.
“No, sweetheart.””
She buried her face against me.
“I thought you believed I was bad.””
My eyes burned.
“I should have listened.””
Behind me, Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus, please.””
I turned around.
“You planned to make me hate my own daughter.””
She shook her head.
“I never wanted that.””
“Then what did you want?””
She looked down.
And for the first time, she answered honestly.
“I wanted everything you had.””
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone looked at the screen.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Mr. Marcus, my name is Andrew Cole.””
I frowned.
“Who are you?””
The man paused.
“I’m the lawyer who handled your father’s estate.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Vanessa.
Andrew continued.
“There’s something you need to know.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“Your father changed his will one week before he died.””
I stopped breathing.
“Why?””
A long pause.
May you like
Then he said:
“Because he discovered someone was trying to marry into your family for the inheritance.””
